Basque Observatory of Human Rights | 02.12.2004 17:14

We are getting in touch again to let you know that our Bulletin Nº 17 is available at the usual address. Alternatively, you can access it directly by clicking on this link:

There are many issues in this bulletin, some of which are terribly serious. We recently had access to the accounts of the latest detainees in the Basque Country. Their witness accounts of their time in custody are shocking. Due to the serious nature of the events and the fact that there have been many people arrested, we shall shortly publish an Info on this issue.

These are the issues you can find in this Bulletin:

- A new forensic report backs up Unai Romano’s torture complaint, which had been shelved.

- Black lists. The issue of the defencelessness of the groups included in these lists and the process followed in order to include people and organisations in the lists.

- Policy of dispersal. The new Spanish government brings no changes to this policy. 40 road accidents involving prisoners’ friends and relatives so far this year.

- The Special Rapporteur to the UN on the Question of Torture reiterates his criticism of the Spanish government, which continues to ignore the recommendations made by international bodies, showing a total lack of willingness to end the use of torture.

- Impunity: The Spanish government releases the Guardia Civil ex-general Rodriguez Galindo, who was in jail for kidnap and murder.
