Homeworkers demo, Cowley Road Tesco

Hildegarde | 02.12.2004 16:24 | Social Struggles | Oxford

On Saturday December 11th there will be a demonstration outside Tesco on Cowley Road in support of the rights of homeworkers.

Meet in the Tesco Metro car park at 11.30am.

Many thousands of people in the UK work at home for companies supplying items such as Christmas crackers to high street stores. As these people are not classified as company employees, their rights are not recognised and they are sometimes paid as little as £1.40 an hour with no sickpay or maternity leave.
The National Group on Homeworking is targetting supermarkets to recognise the rights of these workers and pay them a decent wage. On Saturday December 11th there will be a demonstration outside Tesco on Cowley Road with banners, leaflets and hopefully some local media. Everyone is invited to come along and tell Tesco that this is not acceptable.

Tesco "value" tights is one example. I have spoken to an ex-homeworker in Leeds who packaged these for Tesco. Needless to say she did not receive the NMW (nor has she actually received any money at all yet).

She is prepared to go on the record. Anyone looking for a very powerful, emotive and shocking story? She wants her story told (despite the fact it could hurt her case with the Inland Revenue)

Any questions email above address or see me there tomorrow

Tesco "value" tights are one product that are packaged by homeworkers in Britain

We have tracked down a homeworker who packaged these tights in March 2004. SHE WANTS TO GO ON THE RECORD! Would make for a very emotive and compelling story about "slave" labour in Britain

Come along and chat to me at the action on Saturday or email

thanks
