Oppose London's bid for the Olympics in 2012

In February 2005, delegates from the International Olympic Committee will be visiting east London, providing an opportunity to expose the misleading and shallow populism of the supporters of the London Olympic bid. This is an appeal from one east London resident for activists to come together and campaign to stop the London Olympic bid in its tracks.

This is an urgent request for a debate about how activists in the UK can take action to oppose London's bid to stage the Olympics in 2012.

In February 2005, delegates from the International Olympic Committee will be visiting east London, providing an opportunity to expose the misleading and shallow populism of the London bid supporters. This may be one of our few chances to stop the bid in its tracks - the final decision will be made in July 2005. However, at the moment there are some disparate plans for direct action by local people but no organised campaign.

A corporate-sponsored, multi-million pound Olympics in London will be a financial and environmental disaster built on lies told to some of the poorest communities in Britain. It will lead to even more draconian 'anti-terror' and public order legislation and be paid for not by the rich or businesses but by Londoners.

Some of the arguments against the bid can be found in an article at  http://www.radicalactivist.net/articles/olympicmyths.htm

A leaflet, distributed at the Anarchist Bookfair, is attached (PDF format)

A open discussion list has been set up at  http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/no2london_olympics2012 for anyone who wants to discuss possible options for action.
