How can progressives stop nuclear proliferation/holocaust?

Accepting that governments and other diabolical groups desire nukes, and the fact that the technology is evermore easily spread, how can nuclear proliferation/war be prevented except by conventional war or some cosmic new age enlightenment? How preventable is another major nuclear incident and should that not be a major focus of the progressive community?
How legitimate is attacking a nation, such as Iran, which is trying to obtain nuclear weapons?
As scary as the CIA is, could it really be helping to prevent armageddon (assuming W. isn't trying to start it)? In this age of these ultimate weapons technologies, doesn't someone need to be able to kick some major ass in order to save the world? Is that even possible? What other technologies need to be kept in check (and to what degree, and by what means)? What about biotech? If disasters aren't preventable, what is the chance of surviving them? Should we even try and, if so, how? Is it worth the bother to start up and be part of a new anti-nuke/pro-sustainablity movement?
