Cambridge Forum - Deforestation and Human Rights

This coming Tuesday, November 16th, we have a Cambridge Forum meeting on
Deforestation and Human Rights, with three expert speakers. 8pm to 10pm at CB1 cafe, Mill Road.

The speakers

* David Corson-Knowles of Forest Monitor, who has recently made
fact-finding journeys to Russia and Burma where logging on a massive scale
is affecting the indigenous people of the forest regions.

* Fiona Watson of Survival International, who has worked with Amazonian
people affected by logging, such as the Yanomami, for many years.

* James Hewitt, a freelance consultant on forestry, timber and the
environment, and a seasoned campaigner for better forestry practices and
the rights of local people.

James and I will be reporting on our continuing dialogue with Ridgeons
about the Indonesian timber in their Cambridge depot. They were very
rattled by the report sent at the beginning of this year, as they really do
believe that they are operating in an environmently responsible way. We
have been to look at their timber stock again recently and were pleased to
find that they have made some changes in the timber products they stock,
apparently as a result of our last report.

And to introduce the evening, someone else of rare expertise - from the
Mississippi delta of Yorkshire, Roger Sutcliffe playing blues on a steel
guitar.

Hope to see you all there.
