TANKS APPEAR AT ANTI-WAR PROTEST IN WESTWOOD

LOS ANGELES, November 9, 2004 - At 7:50 PM armored tanks showed up at an anti-war protest in front of the federal building in Westwood.

The tanks circled the block twice, the second time parking themselves in the street and directly in front of the area where most of the protesters were gathered.

Enraged, some of the people attempted to block the tanks, but police quickly cleared the street.

The people continued to protest the presence of the tanks, but after about ten minutes the tanks drove off. It is unclear as to why the tanks were deployed to this location.

Yes there were tanks on the streets of Los Angeles but it was nothing to do with anti-war protesters, it was an army manovere with tanks being taken across the city from one army base to another.

You can see the video of it here -  http://la.indymedia.org/uploads/tanks-on-la-streets.mov

It's difficult to ascertain however whether it was a act of intimidation or just tanks moving from one base to another as the poster above says

yes but

via the federal office park up?
still, "confronting" is the wrong word too, and there's no reason to believe the tanks were there because of the protest so saying "US Military Sends Tanks Into Streets Of LA To Confront Protesters" is a bit off target really :)

- though not sure if the army excercise is true either, but then i'm from london not LA, and here in uk we never get tanks or armoured vehicles deployed in advance of protests, no siree.

when moving tanks ...

... trucks are used. It is safer, cheaper and less likly to involve damage to either equipment or roads.

This was clearly a provocation and a demonstation of 'who wears the pants' in a fascist state.

That you, a resident of los angeles or elsewhere (anywhere) could think otherwise is known technically as 'the ostrich'.

being moved?

The tanks were being moved? Really?

How many times do you see tanks being moved from one base to another?

They are always moved on trucks, as jackslucid said.

Are there any markings on these tanks? After all, Los Angeles=Hollywood=Movies

I think everyone needs to calm down. Michael Moore featured this story on his site, too. Moore is the master of propaganda. The information for this 'news story' was taken from one of the demonstrators, NOT a journalist or an unbiased witness. There is a video, filmed with a hand held camera. It's very interesting. I've seen it. It's blurry and hard to see some images, but I could not see any markings on these 'tanks,' nor could I see any markings on the 'soldiers' uniforms. I find this very suspicious.

The police only showed up to keep people off of the very busy street and away from heavy traffic. Number of police, I could not tell by the video. Only heard the voice of one or two. Number of demonstrators was listed as 'hundreds' but only looked like maybe 25 or less. Several people walking past, but do they count? Hundreds driving past, surely they do not count!

Don't you all find it odd that there are no pictures or stories on the wires or the local and national U.S. news about this incident? You think military tanks moving through Los Angeles, California would generate more press coverage. This story is very odd and it sounds like it was staged. Tanks do not just 'drive by.
