Stop building of new Vivisection beagle unit being built

Vegan Steve | 10.11.2004 14:42 | Animal Liberation

Since 1984 Wickham Labs have been trying to get planning permission to build a beagle unit and state of the art laboratory on some land that they own, as part of an expansion project. Time and time again their application has been rejected. Recently they have appealed against this decision. It is really important that we lodge our complaints against this application, as these will be taken into account when the final decision is made.

Whilst I am opposed to testing of cosmetic products on animals or testing of medicines on animals where a human cell culture or voluntary/paid voluntary human testing set up could be used, there are situations where animal testing is justified in the greater good when testing new vaccines and medications for human use.
If you are opposed to animal experimentation, then just opt out of using any product/medication that has been testing this way, and leave those of us in peace that are happy to use products that have been testing on animals.

Animal Testing at Wickham labs

11.11.2004 20:21

Wickham labs have been testing Botox or whatever crap some people use to inject into their lips to make them look fuller.

Animal testing isn't just about medicine and the advancement of science and neither is it reliable. Most drugs aren't properly tested until they're sold to the general public. Tests on animals and humans prior to that point are both small in scale and taken over a short timeframe. Some testing laboratories are still testing substances whose use is banned in the UK. They're doing this for foreign companies operating in markets where "clinical excellence" is probably the name of a new perfume.

Testing regimes in this country require a drug to be tested on two species before being tested on humans. With their limited knowledge of the physiology of various species, they'll tend to stipulate testing on the species likely to give the best results.

This isn't just old science, it's bad science.

You are assuming that animal experiments are necessary, when in fact they are completely unecessary and even hold back medical progress. This is because no other species can be used as an accurate model for human beings. Animal medical tests are done for financial and legal reasons, not medical or scientific reasons.

For example, in the UK every new drug must be shown to be safe in two species of animal (one of them a "large non-rodent"). This means that all a drug company needs to do to get their new product on the market is find any two species that the drug does not kill. And then if the drug goes on to harm or kill human beings (and there are countless examples of drugs that have gone on to do just that) then the drug company can not be held responsible or sued - "We tested it thoroughly and couldn't have known that this would happen!"

Besides the strong scientific arguments against animal experiments, there are strong moral arguments. You are assuming that IF vivisection could help to advance medical progress then this would be the "greatest good" - I disagree, as the incredible suffering that millions of animals experience in labs is extremely difficult to top - and in any case many rights theories do not think that it is acceptable to imprison, tortue and kill one being even if this will help others.

To read about the arguments against vivisection in more detail, have a good read through  http://www.vivisection-absurd.org.uk - learn the arguments against vivisection before deciding that it must be a good thing.
