Save East Oxford Community Centre - a chance not to be missed

sarah lasenby | 08.11.2004 09:26 | Culture | Social Struggles | Oxford

East Oxford Community Centre is at risk of closure and could become a social centre if we get involved now. Terrible bureaucracy but what a site !

Urgent - we need to work fast if we are not going to loose an opportunity to keep East Oxford Community Centre. There is talk of it being closed and redeveloped as housing or something. Its all very complex but if some people are really willing to get involved with lots of rather horrid bureaucracy stuff it could be available for us to develop as a longer term Social Centre.
Of course it would not be quite the autonomous space we would really like to have but in view of the lack of other spaces we should not loose this chance to save something in the heart of East Oxford where we could attract such a wide diversity of people to participate in all kinds of activities.

What do people think ? The AGM is on Dec 1st [time to be confirmed later] you can become a member easily buy filling in a form from the racks inside the hall - it’s free - or call by between 9.30 and 12noon Mon. - Thurs. to talk to Claire who administers things.
Let your ideas flow - but to make it happen we need people who can commit to coming to meetings, get on the committee and do the boring stuff which may be difficult too.
Not put off ? then lets have your ideas.

genuine community activists stand up now!

EOCC has become a private drinking club for a group of people with no apparent interest in the community, or community values, and has proved inaccessible to community activists due to the impenetrable bureaucracy. Change is neccesary and possible, and I havn't lost faith in the energy of East Oxford yet, that what's so needed can't be created. If this is our opportunity then.......

VISION

20.11.2004 18:06

Imagine a place thronging with vibrant positive activity. A place where you can plan, organise and access resources for your own comunity vision. A place where families not only feel welcome but are an essential part of the furniture. A place where staff feel valued, safe and supported. A creche, a friendly cafe, a meeting place, an information point, a creative space, THE place to find out whats the latest happening.
Ask yourself what is preventing EOCC from being like this......then come and vote them out.
GO ON !
COME AND VOTE FOR A CHANGE !
