Naming the dead: a small report

Ste | 04.11.2004 20:54 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Oxford

just a small report on today's "naming the dead" action on cornmarket street

a short report for all of you who didn't make it to today's action

it went really well!!!!

we started at about 3,15 and ended by 4,45 ... we had about 3000 names,
which were read out through a megaphone by sara, zahra and others... about
500 leaflets distributed... a big balck banner saying "we are dying for
peace" ... two small info posters... 4-5 people "dead" on the ground with
fake blood on their faces and choke around them... a good number of people
from other groups showed up and distributed some more leaflets and small
white "poppies for peace"

many people stopped. we were just in front of hsbc- a very crowded area!

i think the atmosphere we managed to create was really poweful and made a
lot of people think about the issue of iraq- the occupation still going
on, the deaths, the injustice of the whole thing... i personally felt
quite moved by this un-interrupted list of dead people which went on for
almost 2 hours. the list of names had the age and the cause of death of
each person and this made everything so much more vivid. names are so
profound and beautiful a thing that sometimes it can leave you speechless
