Racist film director assassinated
- | 02.11.2004 11:57 | Anti-racism
The Dutch film director Theo van Gogh was assassinated this morning in what is probably a revenge killing for his anti-islam attitudes. Van Gogh was well known for his racist attitudes - he called Moroccan immigrants ‘goat-fuckers’ - and he was directing a thriller about the assassination of Pim Fortuyn. In the film, the murder of Fortuyn is depicted as a left-wing plot within the security services, an unlikely conspiracy theory, but popular with Fortuyn supporters.
A few weeks ago, he made a short anti-Islam film, in English, called “Submission’.

The idea and script were by the MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali and a vehement opponent of Islam. She is under permanent police protection anyway, so van Gogh may have been targeted instead. According to some media reports, a letter in Arabic was found beside van Gogh’s body. The killer has been arrested, so the details should soon be clear. Public opinion has already decided: some reactions on forums and weblogs call for all Muslims to be killed in revenge.

He made a film with a black somali ex-muslim woman mp that was critical of the way that some muslim societies treat women... why does that make him a racist - or is free speech to be supressed now ?

Racists demonstrate in support of van Gogh

At the official commeration this evening, the immigration minister Verdonk spoke, and revealed that Theo van Gogh had personally urged her to take a stand against immigration. The Netherlands has the toughest immigration policies in the EU, partly thanks to the campaigns of van Gogh and Fortuyn.
Theers is already speculation about the next target - two names crop up in the media and internet discussion, anti-Turkish MP Geert Wilders, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who made the controversial anti-Islam film 'Submission' with van Gogh.

Why Racist

Just because you criticise something doesn't make you a racist. No wonder there is such a successful backlash from the right, those chickens have come home to hatch too, with anybody who questions or raises concerns is labeled a racist or worst. Freedom of speech is for everyone.

Racist because...

Theo Van Gogh called Morrocans 'goat fuckers'. If thats not racist then please enlighten me.
I found the film to be simplistic, purely biased and just provocative. Killing Theo Van Gogh will cause many uninformed people who subscribe to biased and ignorant ideologies born of fear to solidfy and harden their views of Muslims and Islam; the current targets of demonisation in the world today.
Theo Van Gogh and the person who killed him are nothing more than fanatic elements. I despise both these types and don't think that such ideologies will lead to a better understanding among different cultures and religions.
Differnces in culture, religon, language, customs etc.. are here to stay until the end of time. It's about time that we make an effort to understand each other, and not propagate stereotypical and incorrect views of each other.

man is tribal

The comment was directed at an ethnicity (i.e. a socially constructed division between peoples) as opposed to a race (i.e. a biological division/s between peoples). He said Morrocans are goatfuckers not North Africans. It's a comment that certainly seems to have the trappings of hardened irrationality, but where it's directed I think causes it to be...maybe ethnocentrism, not racism. (he could be a racist though, just I dont think this comment would be an illustration of his racism)

Sounds nice, but considering man's tribalistic past I doubt such is possible in man's future. People seem to be unable to feel a unity, a belonging significant enough to sacrifice for, with humanity as an entity in its entirety, but only to smaller tribal ethno-cultural entites; specifically those where genetic relatedness is at a high. (just look at how much more altruistically a mother treats her own children than the children of others--her evolutionary interests are not as great in protecting children other than her own)
