IRISH ANTI WAR ACTIVIST CONVICTED FOR 'TAKING OUT' PLANE

j | 28.10.2004 20:07 | Anti-militarism | London | World

A peace activist who took an axe to a US Navy Plane and prevented its use in the illegal genocide in Iraq was convicted of criminal damage today in Ireland, and faces a lengthy prison sentence when sentenced tomorrow. Urgent solidarity actions encouraged.

Mary Kelly is a fifty two year old nurse and mother from Athlone in Ireland. She has been a political activist for many years.

In 2002 she risked her life to get medical aid to the Palestinians under siege in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. She has also undertaken humanitarian work in Colombia, Scotland and Ireland.

In January 2003, using an axe, she damaged a U.S. military warplane at Shannon civilian airport, helping disable it for several months. For this action the Irish Government persists in trying to criminalise her - she has been on trial once (Kilrush, June 2003 ), twice (Ennis, June 2004) and now faces a third defence of a charge of 'criminal damage', with up to ten years in prison if convicted by the jury.

Well, she was convicted today. Sentencing will go ahead tomorrow.
