On 7 Oct 04, hard drives from two IndyMedia servers were seized from the London office of US-owned web hosting company, Rackspace, at the request of the US Justice (sic) Department. Apologies for the delay in posting — a minor viral infection picked up at the ESF has slowed me down.

Photo of Greek stall: Example of antiamerican-antisemitic icon?

22.10.2004 10:29

Comment and discuss: The posters seen on the photo of the greek stall are an example of how antiamericanism can lead to antisemitism. We see on the poster an example of a personifying critique of capitalism. A "capitalist" signified by the top hat and bourgeois dress "unmasks". The "capitalist" appears as a monster. This icongraphy reminds the reader of nazipropaganda against "judoa-capitalist US-British imperialism". Thus, any personifying crtique of capitalism - as seen on the greek poster - is antisemitic. Comment and discuss.

re anti-semitic

poster

the top hat, cigar etc were long beleived to be a typical
stereotype of the robber baron, personified in JP MORGAN

he is believed to have been the inspiration
for the game peice of the toff in monopoly

the demonisation of facial traits
is exatly that ...

a visual way of depicting an 'ugly characteristic'

visual demonisation

many images of demons have what was considered
at the time ...'ugly characteristics'

big ears, pointy nose...
[er horns...]

whether jewish peoples were the original target
or just politically useful as a memetic shift in
this stereotyping or not entirely clear to me...

In Nazi Germany the stereotypical 'jew' was given these demonic
facial characteristic and also labelled with a star to make that connection...

these images were countered by work of artists such as John Heartsfeld [spell?]
and George Gross who just used cut and paste or gross exaggeration
as characatuer [al la cartoon satire]

interesting to note the rise in jokes about eastern europeans
and gypsies/asylum seekers through the 90's that have now become mainstream
helping to shift the meme from one geographic zone to another ...
cold war to the facist neo-liberal consumer terror protection market we now
decieve ourselves with on a daily basis...

question:

if you see a picture of a man or women with a big nose...
do you automatically think: aaahh 'Jewish'???

or do you think the same question i ask myself?
[i wonder if...etc etc]

i think if something is mass media, it has the job of
communicating something to a cross section of people...sometimes
older traditions [such as the greek poster] appear nowadays
'racist'...

how does one go about making someone look evil,
without crossing these boundaries...?

easy, just put BUSHES FACE or neocons or BLAIR...on everything

much love

great pictures

do the right thing
