Catalan Solidarity in England

Catalan Solidarity is a group based in England, that started in the summer of 2004 with the aim of both supporting Catalan political prisoners and raising awareness of their situation.

Stop Torture!
Stop Torture!

We want to create an international solidarity movement for political prisoners that shows that where repression occurs there will be like-minded people in solidarity with its victims, regardless of the fact that we may be of different culture, geography and language. We urge both Catalans living in England and non-Catalans here to write to prisoners and offer them friendship and support. Another focus of the campaign is to inform people about the continued struggle in Catalonia for freedom from the grip of a post-fascist Spanish administration and to raise awareness of Catalan culture, language, customs and people. We hope that this website will inspire you to find out more

What support are prisoners receiving from inside Catalonia?

Catalan Solidarity has been inspired by the work of Rescat, a Catalan organisation set up in January 2001 with the aim of supporting Catalan people who have been imprisoned by the Spanish government for politically motivated activism. Following mass arrests and imprisonment of activists connected to the independentists and anti-fascist movements an informal collective came together to provide both practical support to prisoners and challenge the media portrayal of such individuals which had been fuelled throughout the Spanish mainland by a government, media and police conspiracy. As well as offering practical support and advice to imprisoned Catalans, their supporters and those awaiting trial, Rescat has been involved in high profile demonstrations, including those in front of the main court in Madrid where people have been judged, actions to support political prisoners who are on hunger strike and events to raise awareness of the political situation in Catalonia.
