The last few weeks have been so busy for all of us that there have been very few moments to stand back and assess what we have achieved so far. Across the country thousands of us have been involved in the campaign. Here are some of the highlights:
9th September
‘Fight Prejudice – Fight the Ban’ Campaign launched in Parliament Square.
Picket outside Downing Street.
10th September
Tony Blair visited at home in Trimdon by demonstrators.
11th September
Tony Blair blockaded in Chequers by demonstrators. He later meets two of them and says he hopes a “compromise can be reached”.
13th September
50 ‘NO BAN’ beacons blaze across the countryside.
15th September
Demonstration in Parliament Square – 20,000 people attend at five days notice.
18th September
Tony Blair, at Leeds Castle, says: “We sought a compromise. Unfortunately it was rejected in the Commons and the Lords. We’ll have to find a way through.”
19th September
Alun Michael cancels visit to Peak District.
20th September
Alun Michael cancels visit to Dorset.
22nd September
Demonstrators meet Alun Michael in Exeter.
Farmers announce they may stop MOD training on their land in the event of ban.
25th September
Peter Hain blockaded at home by demonstrators. A delegation later meet Mr Hain.
28th September
Labour Conference Demonstration, Brighton – 10,000 people attend.
2nd October
John Grogan (anti-MP) blockaded in surgery by demonstrators.
5th October
Ben Bradshaw ‘greeted’ by members and supporters at Billingsgate Market.
6th October
John Prescott met by protestors in Durham.
7th October
Ben Bradshaw and Candy Atherton met by protests in Cornwall…and we’ll see you on Dartmoor Ben.
And also since 9th September…
2,552 new members join the Countryside Alliance.
30,000 ‘Fight Prejudice – Fight the Ban’ correx boards distributed and erected around the countryside.
Sir Sydney Kentridge QC (lawyer who successfully defended Nelson Mandela), to lead the challenge to the validity of the Parliament Act.
Countryside Alliance receives support for its campaign from all major land use and rural organisations.
Conservative Party pledge to introduce a Government Bill to reverse any hunt ban.
Thousands of pro-hunting letters in the national, regional and local press.
Regional, national and international press coverage exceeds 1,100 pages.
Countryside Alliance website becomes the top ranked UK politics website beating the usual market leader The Guardian, as well as outstripping US political sites.
