Cesar Zelada still in jail
Fuerza de Izquierda Socialista (Perú) | 08.10.2004 17:17 | Venezuela | Repression
We have just received news that Cesar Zelada, the Peruvian Hands off Venezuela Campaign organiser and member of the Fuerza de Izquierda Socialista jailed in Bolivia, is still in jail.
It seems that the judge set his bail but since he did not have money to pay for it (approximately 150 US dollars) he remains in jail. It is a scandal that the Bolivian embassy in London told the campaign that he was free when that was not the case. This false information delayed the whole process by which the payment of the bail could be organised. Clearly they were very keen to get rid of the pressure of the international campaign.
His conditions in jail are quite precarious as he has very little food. Other political prisioners, like Colombian peasant leader Pacho Cortes are helping him out by sharing the food parcels they receive from their families. The comrade is nevertheless in good spirits and is mantaining political discussions with fellow prisoners.
Comrades of Cesar from the FIS in Peru are now travelling to Bolivia to pay the bail and any other legal costs involved. We appeal to all supporters of the campaign to donate in order to cover these expenses.
