Dan Roberts | 08.10.2004 00:27 | Analysis | World

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.2MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. China, Russia, Netherlands, and Cuba.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (October 8) is up at the website  http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:52)

This week's show features stories from China Radio International, the Voice of Russia, Radio Netherlands, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From China- China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that the US Congress's report on democracy in Hong Kong is not true. Poland will remove its troops from Iraq next year- 70% of the Polish population is opposed to having troops in Iraq. On Monday there were pleas at the UN to intervene and stop the escalated violence in Palestine and Israel. On Wednesday the US vetoed a UN draft resolution to put a halt to the Israeli incursions into Palestine. The top US arms inspector admitted that there had been no development of WMD in Iraq since 1991.
From Russia- A commentary on Donald Rumsfeld's admission that there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and Al-Queda. A commentary on the implementation of the US missile defense program, formerly known as Star Wars. French security forces arrested the alleged leaders of ETA, the Basque separatist movement that wants the creation of its own nation from parts of Spain and France.
From Netherlands- A Dutch parliamentarian wants male circumcision banned in the Netherlands, where it is only performed for religious, not medical, reasons. The US administration has been acting in a neutral way toward Venezuela recently, a change in attitude that is analyzed by a British professor of Latin American studies.
From Cuba- Israel has admitted that its plan to withdraw from occupied Gaza will prevent the emergence of a Palestinian state and freeze future peace talks, all with Washington's approval. Finally, a Viewpoint on the "Crime of Barbados," the bombing of an airliner full of Cubans 28 years ago- the perpetrators were never brought to justice and were protected by the US administration.

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
THIS WEEK ONLY! This program will be aired on Friday afternoon at 1pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via  http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better-  http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PDST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)-  http://www.radiolavalamp.org

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated.
