Cesar Zelada is FREE!

Fuerza de Izquierda Socialista (Perú) | 06.10.2004 16:23 | Venezuela | Repression

Cesar Zelada, the Peruvian Hands Off Venezuela organiser and member of the Socialist Left Force (FIS) in Peru, has now been released pending trial from the Bolivian prision where he was being kept.

Cesar Zelada is free at last!! We just got the news that the Bolivian embassy in Spain has called the Spanish Students Union to announce that Cesar Zelada has been released. It seems that the Bolivian Workers Union, COB has collaborated in providing guarantors for him, so that he can be released pending his trial. This is a stupendous victory for the international campaign and the world working class movement.

Cesar will have to remain in the country until then, which might be one or two months. Also the embassy said that chemical tests done to Cesar’s bag to determine wether he was carrying dynamite have given negative results. If these news are confirmed this would also mean that the accusation against him (carrying a dynamite stick) would be very difficult to prove. As we said all along this was a political case.

There is no doubt that his release is the direct result of the extraordinary international campaign that we have launched. We thank all those who have participated in the campaign and made Cesar’s release possible.

As we receive more informatiom we will circulate it and let the you know what the next steps of the campaign wil be (he is still pending trial and there a number of other political prisioners still in jail).
