New dangerous radio masts to be built in Scotland for G8 summit

As part of the preparation for the upcoming G8 summit, July 2005, companies are planning to put up new radio masts. If anyone wants to do community-based action against the G8 these masts will be a good focal point.

This was in the last issue of *Private Eye*. The 'Tetra' radio system is a new one that the police are starting to use. It's already caused head ache and nausea in officers who have been using it; the effects of the masts can't be good either.

NB, the Broughty Ferry are mentioned in the text is NOT near Gleneagles, it's a suburb of Dundee, about 40 miles away.

Telecom company MM02 Airwave has hit on another excuse for flouting planning law in its attempt to fix Tetra radio masts for the new police radio system to anything that's bolted to the ground.

Last week Angus council in Tayside turned down an application to stick a mast on top of a telephone exchange in Broughty Ferry, near Gleneagles Hotel. Nevertheless Airwave plans to go ahead with its plan regardless, saying it needs to get the mast up before next year's G8 summit at Gleneagles.

Tayside police are baffled by the urgency and have told local hacks that all security plans for the world leaders' summit -- including communication resources -- are still at an early stage. An alternative is to put a Tetra mast, disguised as a flagpole, on the hotel itself."
