Dan Roberts | 01.10.2004 00:21 | Analysis | Globalisation | World

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.2MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, China, and Cuba.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (October 1) is up at the website  http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:00)

This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- A press review concerning the Middle East, where a top EU Foreign Policy Adviser comments on the state of affairs. The US has created an Office of Reconstruction and Stabilization which is critiqued by an international conflict resolution specialist- he reminds us that the Iraqi death toll in Gulf War 1 was 310,000. Some experts say that torture is worse than terrorism because it is carried out by the state or their representatives- a specialist appeared before the Congressional Human Rights Caucus this week. Two Italian hostages were released in Iraq this week, possibly as a result of the Italian government paying one million dollars in ransom- an Iraq security expert discusses the implications of the increasing number of hostages being taken in the so-called war on terror.
From China- Russia is planning on creating a system of terrorist alerts like the US has installed. China is training police for peace keeping actions in Haiti, the first time the UN has used Chinese troops in the western hemisphere.
From Cuba- The Iraqi Health Ministry compiled statistics on civilian deaths in Iraq, but was banned from releasing the numbers by the interim government. The Syrian Foreign Minister spoke to the UN General Assembly, accusing Israel of provoking the war on Iraq while completely ignoring UN resolutions. The Chicago Council on Foreign Relations released a study Tuesday pointing out that the majority of Americans oppose Bush's unilateral military attacks, while strongly supporting US participation in international treaties and agreements like the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the Land Mine Ban, and participation in the International Criminal Court. Finally a Viewpoint on the illegal US blockades on Cuba, which the US calls "The Cuban Democracy Act" and "The Cuban Freedom and Solidarity Law."

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via  http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better-  http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PDST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)-  http://www.radiolavalamp.org
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative-  http://www.partytown.com/radio
I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)
