Dan Roberts | 24.09.2004 00:11 | Analysis | World

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.2MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, Germany, Russia, China, and Cuba.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (September 24) is up at the website  http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:54)

This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, Radio Deutsche Welle, the Voice of Russia, China Radio International, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- Britain's anti-terrorist laws are banned by the European Convention on Human Rights, as were the actions taken against the IRA in the 70s and 80s. Calls for reform in the UN have been mounting since the US and England bypassed the organization and invaded Iraq- there is debate about broadening the membership of the Security Council.
From Germany- Bush's speech at the UN defending the invasion of Iraq, and the world reaction, is analyzed by a correspondent. Then a European Press Review covering Bush's speech.
From Russia- The US has quietly sold Israel 5000 satellite-guided aviation bombs. Then an analysis of the first 18 months of the US war on Iraq, recently called "illegal" by Kofi Annan.
From China- Japan seems likely to extend its troop deployment to Iraq, despite strong opposition at home. Iran says it is converting raw uranium for enrichment, in defiance of the UN, but says it has no intention of making any weapons.
From Cuba- The US Congress has voted to deny funding for implementation of new restrictions on Cuban-American's trips to the island. Then a Viewpoint on the reorganization of the UN Security Council, which many see as dominated by the wishes of the US.

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via  http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better-  http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PDST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)-  http://www.radiolavalamp.org
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative-  http://www.partytown.com/radio
I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)
