No to internment, no to torture! Sun 3 Oct

CAMPACC / Stop Police Terror | 17.09.2004 09:35

Campaigners are calling for people to gather in solidarity with detainees held at Belmarsh prison on the day before the Law Lords review a High Court judgement.

In August 2004, the High Court ruled that evidence from torture could be admissible evidence against fourteen foreign nationals held without charge at Belmarsh and Woodhill maximum-security prisons and at Broadmoor Hospital.

The men are detained under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001, which allows the Home Secretary to detain indefinitely any foreign nationals if he has 'reasonable suspicion' that they have links with 'international terrorism'. At hearings last year, the government acknowledged that some of the 'evidence' could have been obtained by torturing detainees elsewhere, e.g. at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib. The men have never been questioned by the police, nor have they been put on trial.
