WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING IN VENEZUELA?

oxford indymedia SCREENING - Sunday September 12th, 7.30pm, Asian Cultural Centre, Manzil Way, off Cowley Road, Oxford.

A screening of Calle y Media Collective's scintillating film:

"BOLIVARIAN VENEZUELA: PEOPLE AND STRUGGLE OF THE FOURTH WORLD WAR"

Countering the mainstream media's depiction of President Hugo Chavez as an authoritarian nationalist, this film shows the Bolivarian revolution as democratic and coming from below, directed and controlled by the Venezuelan popular movements. Come and see this powerful film to understand why the recent referendum on Chavez' presidency was won, and how Venezuela suggests a model for the Americas and the rest of the world.

Plus DISCUSSION.

On the night of the recent opposition-organized recall referendum on Hugo Chavez' presidency, the Independent newspaper announced that the opposition had won. The actual results showed a substantial majority for the completion of Chavez' term. Calle y Media Collective's film gives a compelling history of Venezuela since the Caracazo uprising of 1989. Rather than events inside the Presidential palace, the film focusses on the social movements which are radicalizing the Bolivarian revolution from below, and shows how real change is beginning to improve the lot of the 70% of Venezuelans who live below the poverty line.
