rampart | 26.08.2004 01:26 | Free Spaces | Indymedia | Social Struggles | London

Somewhat short notice as usual but...

Tonight (thursday 26th)

  • a screening of bits of The Miami Model (http://ftaaimc.org/miamimodel) the film the NYPD shut down a few days ago... http://www.indybay.org/archives/archive_by_id.php?id=2377&category_id=12
  • a screening of resistance to eviction of the 10 year old squatted EUSKAL JAI AURRERA social centre in the basque country (see http://barcelona.indymedia.org)
  • a screening of the video journals from zapatista style DNC2RNC democracy uprising march that arrives in New York this evening for the Republican National Convention (see http://www.dnc2rnc.org for details)
  • plus a workshop on subtitling and translating video...

From 6pm at the rampART (thursday 26th) a group of people are meeting to learn and work on subtitling video for wider distribution of international radical video content. This meeting was spawned by the workshop on video activism/filmmaking (http://rampart.omxtra.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=40) held on monday. It is hoped that a regular weeking meeting will form at which video and skills can be exchanged. Want to get involved?

From 8pm there will be screeninging of some of the latest grassroots video news from around the world including (freshly subtitled) footage of last weeks resistance to the eviction of the 10 year old squatted social centre in the basque country (see http://barcelona.indymedia.org) and video journals of the DNC2RNC democracy march that arrived in New York today. (see http://www.dnc2rnc.org for details). Plus a screening of 'miami model' (http://ftaaimc.org/miamimodel) the film the NYPD shut down a few days ago... http://www.indybay.org/archives/archive_by_id.php?id=2377&category_id=12

report back from subtitling

26.08.2004 22:12

Well. It took a lot longer than we might have hoped but progress was made and a few more people now have new knowledge of how to do open-caption sub titling for translations.

We took a three minute film from lasts weeks social centre eviction in the basque country and added english subtitles. The intention was to show it at the ex-grand banks social centre discussion but obviously situations have changed.

The video is of EUSKAL JAI where 25 workers from the enterprise DECOTA S.A., protected by hundreds of riot police, began to demolish the social centre. The city was under police siege for four days but the one eviction led to three new squat actions (at least one of those has already been evicted). 15,000 people protested against the eviction of the Gaztetxe (squatted social center). (see  https://publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/world/2004/08/296680.html)

Anyway the video we have translated can be downloaded at...
 http://barcelona.indymedia.org/usermedia/video/5/KAZEROLADA16.08.04.wmv

And if you cut and paste the following into a new text document which you save as
KAZEROLADA16.08.04.sub and place in the same folder you downloaded the video clip into, you should get the subtitles when you play the video.

help with subtitling

28.08.2004 02:08

i tried to do this but it didn't seem to work so I'd be grateful for more info - is there any way I can find out how to do that on the 'net or can you tell me more through here? For example, what kind of text file should it be saved in (word, notepad?) and what folder would the wmv be saved to? And what exactly needs to be saved in the text file (e.g. from '-- start' or (SUBTITLE) etc.)

thanks

tiger :)
