Ewa Jasiewicz : Update

Update from Ewa's lawyer

The National Union of Journalists has got behind Ewa's case, writing a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. I was not clear, but it sounded as if the Israeli NUJ (possibly the National Federation of Israeli Journalists) has also got involved, which is obviously excellent.

Apparently there has been much diplomatic squabbling between the Israeli Embassy in London and the NUJ.

Ewa was due to hear this morning whether she would be allowed to stay or not.

Her lawyer was optimistic.

It would be especially good if someone could do media work for Ewa. This case is very important, with obvious implications for freedom of information. As Ewa herself said, she is trying to break down the often voyeuristic separation between those reporting and being reported on. If journalists such as Ewa, whose quality of work stems from her humanity, cannot travel, those who cling to the establishment line will continue to have the monopoly of our mindshare.

On a personal note, until very recently my experiences of Israel were all as a very enthusiastic Jewish tourist. I know the terror of seeing media reports about a suicide bomb blast close to where loved ones live, and fighting the overloaded telephone network to check their safety. All my cousins have up till now been lucky. A few of them identify as being on that very Israeli left that Ewa is seeking to draw attention to. They have a very challenging time. I also spent 4 months in Occupied Palestine, initially to observe with my own eyes, but quickly I became involved in human rights work, especially in the Gaza Strip.

To anyone who thinks that those of us involved in this struggle are one-sided or simplistic about the situation, please be aware that the vast majority of us struggling for peace and justice, International, Palestinian and Israeli, are aware of the complexity, the history and the daily traumas faced by all groups.
