Muslims for Bush some hope at last

realist | 17.08.2004 10:24

A group of sensible Muslims have launched a website called Muslims for Bush. This is a very heartwarming website, which shows there are good muslims out there who share our values and support our freedoms. Good look to them I say.

Below is a link to their excellent website. This website makes a refreshing change from the image of muslims as die hard fanatics. This website will do much to combat anti-muslim racism and improve the public image of muslims. Who know it could become cool to be a muslim. Excellent work keep it up. :)

A classic Indymedia series of postings.

First a post is placed on the board showing how some Muslims support Bush. Now this may seem surprising to a UK readership but in the US would not be seen as unsual. The Bush / Republican message of Family Values, Pro-Life, Low Taxation etc plays very well with part of the US Muslim community. What is predictable and to be blunt disgusting is how quickly this post is turned into a anti Jewish attack.

Indymedia and its supporters are becoming rapidly marginalised and ignored because for ever larger sections of the broad UK Left it and they are seen as having an anti Jewish agenda. This series of posts reinforces that view.

A year ago at my University the majority of us were regular readers of IM now only a few of us and then not often.

Muslim life in the USA

The responses to this post show a strong British misunderstanding of Muslim life in the US. Bush took great pains to explain to American Muslims how is war against terror was not against them. He has visited Mosques, Cultural centres and homes of prominent Muslims.

American Muslims are by and large quite conservative in their views, they favour a strong emphasis on the family and often find the Republican Party better represents their views than the Democrats. Bush may well be seen as an invader of Muslim countries here in Europe but that view is by no means universal in the American Muslim world. Pakistani Americans are almost 100% in favour, Iraqi Americans probably around 70% and other Middle East Muslims probably 50/50.

Muslims have in general done well out of life in the US, their income is higher than the US average, their children are far more likely to be Degree educated compared to the norm and they enjoy a degree of religious freedom which is enshrined in law.

I do not find it in any way surprising to see this website.
