The UK Information Commisioner Richard Thomas has criticised the introduction of ID cards saying the UK could "sleepwalk into a surveillance society"



An unlikely ally has emerged in the campaign against ID cards.

The UK Information Commisioner Richard Thomas has criticised the introduction of ID cards saying the UK could "sleepwalk into a surveillance society"

He also cast doubt on the state plans for a population register and a database of every child in the UK.

He cited the experience of the Spanish people under the the fascist Franco as an example of what can happen when the state has too much information on its citizens.
