Nestle whistleblower needs support

Nestlé whistleblower needs support to stop being deported to Pakistan where threats have been made against his life. Plus a theatre piece from the WOMAD festival showing a Nestlé Medical Delegate at work.

Nestlé whistleblower, Syed Aamir Raza, resigned from Nestlé and began a campaign to stop the company's aggressive marketing of baby foods in Pakistan after a 4-month-old child died from unsafe bottle-feeding at a doctor's clinic he was visting. Aamir and the doctor, who helped Aamir in his campaign, report that Nestlé managers then came looking for Aamir and threatened him and his family. Prior to presenting his evidence at the UK House of Commons, shots were fired at Aamir's house in Pakistan, nearly hitting his brother and threats were made against him by doctors implicated in taking bribes. When in Canada to present evidence, Aamir became so concerned about the threats that he applied for asylum. He has now reached the end of the process and is asking for public support for his case. A petition can be found at  http://www.supportaamirraza.org/

Aamir's evidence is further confirmation of institutionalised and systematic malpractice by Nestlé. Its promotional methods violate marketing requirements adopted by the World Health Assembly, as further documented in the new report from the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) Breaking the Rules, Stretching the Rules 2004. Some of the evidence was shown at the annual demonstration at Nestlé (UK) HQ on 15 May 2004. Video of this can be viewed on the Baby Milk Action website at  http://www.babymilkaction.org/press/press15may04.html

Baby Milk Action (the UK member of IBFAN) presented a theatre piece at the WOMAD Festival in Reading on 25 July 2004, showing the tactics used by Nestlé in pushing its products. This and the follow-up question time can be seen at  http://www.babymilkaction.org/ram/womad04/womad04bmac.html
