Terrorism

David | 29.07.2004 11:35 | Terror War

Israelis cheered silently Tuesday when the government published its latest terrorism statistics, holding their collective breath lest their streak of good luck run out. For the Israeli Defense Forces, the announcement was an occasion for a careful pat on the back, a sign of a job well done.

The announcement of the tally of terrorist activity for the first half of 2004 showed a sharp decline — estimated to be 75% — in the number of successful suicide attacks. IDF Intelligence wing chief Major General Aharon Zeevi Farkash told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Security Committee of the Knesset that since the beginning of 2004, 62 attempts to carry out terror attacks were foiled and only 10 succeeded.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz praised the army and the internal security service, the Shabak, for their efforts.

"This is a new trend. The level of terror is in decline," Mofaz said during a visit to the IDF Central Command. "But we have to keep up the attacks. We have an excellent army and an excellent chief of staff," Mofaz added, a remark made all the more noteworthy because of his sometime stormy relationship with Chief of Staff General Moshe Ya'alon.

Mofaz also indicated that for the first time in three years, there are signs of cooperation from the Palestinian Authority. "The P.A. has confiscated some money sent to the terrorists, and for quite some time our intelligence notes efforts by the P.A. to prevent terror," he said. Central Command officers told Mofaz that in the past six months, they foiled no fewer than 58 attempts to carry out suicide bombings and arrested more than 2,000 Palestinians. The number of arrests points to one of the keys to the new-found success of the Israeli security forces: de-facto, unlimited, no-holds-barred control over the West Bank. The IDF moves freely in and out of every Palestinian town, often occupying central parts of major cities (such as Nablus, considered to be the major hub of terror in the past year) for prolonged periods. It also has erected roadblocks, the number of which is estimated at more than 100. Shabak, which had lost many of its sources after the Oslo accords, has regained much knowledge of the terrorists' plans and whereabouts, and developed an efficient system of "closing circles" — military jargon for quickly turning information into action.

Another major factor is the security fence. Although barely one-third of its planned length is completed, it poses new difficulties for the terrorists. Before its erection in northern Samaria, more than 80% of suicide bombers penetrated Israel from that region. Now, terrorist organizers in Nablus or Jenin have to smuggle the would-be bomber to Ramallah, where he or she must contact another operative, and receive the explosive belt, which must be smuggled separately. Another operative, often a resident of East Jerusalem (who carries an Israeli ID, and therefore has an easier pass through the roadblocks), tries to smuggle the person and charge into Israel. All this activity takes time and makes it easier for Shabak to trace it somewhere along the way. Six such attempts were foiled in or around Ramallah in the past two months.

The continuing pressure, as well as the disintegration of Palestinian organizations because of Israeli closures and raids, has created a "localization" of terrorist activities: They are carried out not by large organizations, headed by operatives who send orders to the ranks, but rather by local cells, most of them loosely organized.

A major force in financing and encouraging these activities is Hezbollah. Its top operative, Keis Ubeid, the mastermind of the kidnapping of Israeli citizen Elhanan Tennenbaum (since freed in a hostage deal), is now the single most important person in Palestinian terrorism, far more influential then Fatah or Hamas leaders.

Proud as they may be of their success in the field, IDF commanders are aware that it is temporary. "Over time, the other side will adapt," senior officers told the Forward. "If we do not change the situation drastically, military measures alone may not suffice."

They are also well aware of the effect of the measures taken on their own soldiers. One notable brigade commander, Colonel Roni Numa, told the Forward of a talk he had with several of his troops. "We have become numb," they told him. "When we erect a roadblock, we are polite in the first hour, less polite in the second, nervous in the eighth. By the 10th hour, we may smash someone's headlight because we are tired and irate.

"The soldiers carry on, of course, knowing that their activity is aimed at saving lives in Israel. But their words, as well as testimonies of other soldiers about "Operation Rainbow in a Cloud" in Rafah a few weeks ago, paint an alarming picture. They warn the Israeli public that although terror is on a sharp decline and the security forces succeed in stopping most attempts, the relief may be only temporary.

Typical response on Indymedia when anything except the usual anti Semitic lies are printed. Lets all cry Zionist when the truth about Israel is told.

You Jew haters are all the same, Left or Right we see through your bullshit and recognise the Nazi underneath it.

Anyone want to take bets on the time this will be up on the main board before the inevitble Indymedia pro Arab / pro Muslim censorship happens ? This post made at 1348 UK time.

Dear SF

29.07.2004 14:22

Would you allow your daughter to marry a palestinian man, and embrace him and call him son? Thought not. Who is the racist now?

Not in the employ of the Israeli embassy

Just curious (if you care to answer)

29.07.2004 14:42

Hey, "If You Want to Build a Wall", I'm curious as to just what your posiiton really is. Heck maybe we have more in common than you imagine, maybe we support the same things. Let's find out........

Do you agree with this? The Israelis should totally end the occupation, evacuate their settlers and demolish the settlements. Build the wall along the Green Line, not at all encroaching on the occupied Palestinian territory. Allow the Palesitinians to form their own state

THAT what you mean?

And of course all that goes with this. No open border except as negotiated. If the Palestinians can't manage to negotiate a deal for being able to work in Israel and the rest of the world won't help them -- OK if they starve? And OK if/when a Palestinian artillery position in this new state opens fire across into Israel a battery of Israeli howitzers returns fire to take it out -- and you'll blame the Palestinians for the innocent civilians killed if they chose to set that mortar or rocket launcher up in a populated area instead of an open field?

THAT what you are talking about?

I want you to consider a possibility. Is saying "move the wall to the correct boundary" the position from where you started? By which I mean before this whole business about the "wall" you recognized the legitimacy of a boundary? Or have you been maneuvered into recognizing the legitimate existence of israel within some boundary by the Israeli actions (and that perhaps this is the real purpose -- after all, the only expensive to construct "wall" portions of the fence ARE along the Green Line and the rest COULD be temporary).

To: Not in the employ of the Israeli embassy

29.07.2004 14:55

Thank goodness that are not in the employ. Obviously, not a diplomat...

Here is your simplistic comment: "Would you allow your daughter to marry a palestinian man, and embrace him and call him son? Thought not. Who is the racist now?"

I will now state a fact, and then a question:

The fact is that before the Oslo war began, if a 'Palestinian' married a Jew, they were allowed to live in Israel together, with full citizenship, without fear of being persecuted in any way. Perhaps the father of the Jew would not be happy, but...

Due to obvious terror concerns, it is not so easy anymore, and although inter-marriage still happens, the Israeli authorities pay attention to the past, and therefore are justifiably wary...

Now let's look at the flip side. A Jew marries a 'Palestinian' and lives in the disputed territories. The 'Palestinian' is disowned and the Jew is not even recognised. Worse yet, they are under constant threat of violence. This is an undisputed fact, that I am happy to back it up if you would like.

Now the question.

If your family/relatives/friends had been murdered in cold blood by a known entity ie: the IRA, how would you feel if your daughter got married to a known IRA terrorist/sympathiser? Would you be so quick to say yes, and not hold any resentment? Not second-guess? It's not black and white, is it?

My point is don't judge so quickly when you're a bystander...

The Right Enforcer

Fact

29.07.2004 15:37

There are many wrongs associated with the wall / fence / barrier. There is however one indisputable fact.

It has directly led to a fall in attacks by Palestinians against Israelis. More suicide bombers than ever before have been captured before they could complete their missions.

Would you lot give it a fucking rest! Why don't you bloody well grow up and have a decent argument instead of trading pathetic insults!!

no-one's interested in your racist little tantrum, x

30.07.2004 13:32

x is annoyed because the flow of anti-jewish neo-nazi propaganda that he/she so enjoys from Indymedia has been challenged by the presentation of an alternative view.

silence them! they don't agree with me!

not a tantrum

30.07.2004 14:05

Not really. I just think that this 'alternative' website is hardly enhanced by an uncritical piece about how great Shaul Mofaz is. This is a man considered to be to the right of Sharon and whose main claim to fame is not his responsibility for the building of a wall but for the demolition of hundreds of them - ones which previously supported the rooves on Palestinian homes.

Don't call me a racist. Its just a cheap cop-out. You call me a nazi, I call you a nazi. We both say we can't be nazis cos we're both Jewish, etc. You think I'm avoiding discussion, ok impress me then. Tell me why Mofaz is not a murdering thug.

x

hmm?

30.07.2004 14:35

"You call me a nazi"

No - I said you enjoyed anti-Jewish neo-nazi propaganda. Whether you enjoy it because you're a nazi, a psychopath, a racist or a Islamist doesn't interest me.

"Tell me why Mofaz is not a murdering thug."

Well, he's never murdered anyone, he's never been charged with murdering anyone and he's only been accused of murder by petulant, genocidal, Jew hating Islamic extremists who support and commit horrific atrocities, including rape, murder, torture, against hundreds of thousands of civilians across the globe (e.g. Sudan, Kashmir, Phillipines, Uzbekistan - the list is almost endless) - so I'm disinclined to consider their opinions anything but risible. Mofaz is an fairly elected representative of the Jewish and Arab electorate in a democratic country (yes, I'm aware of the groundless slurs propogated by the aforementioned extremists - but sadly for them, it doesn't change the truth). As such he acts with the authority of millions of people who are tired of mindless Palestinian violence.

silence them! they don't agree with me!

Hitler was also elected

30.07.2004 15:09

Not impressed. But not much point talking. Its not a question of silencing the critics. Just that the critics have nothing to say except that anyone who disagrees with THEM must be a psychopath or an Islamic fundamentalist.

x

x's bizarre revisionism!

30.07.2004 15:34

Nazi Germany was a democracy with fair and transparent elections?

Hitler didn't seize power, but was repeatedly re-elected by the German people?

No? Not a good analogy then. I'm not impressed.

silence them! they don't agree with me!

bored

30.07.2004 15:48

Actually neither of us are impressed and neither of us is going to change the other one's minds. What we do have in common is being very bored (at work?) and engaging in this pointless exchange.

Shalom, lehitraot (not)
