Like any project of this nature we're striking a balance between direct radical stuff like discussions/workshops on direct action and the process of squatting the building and showing people that there are ways to live a fun life outside of (and in opposition to) capitalism. We're not expecting or demanding that the people coming to this will necessarily be hardened activists or squatters; it's about reaching out, as much as anything. If anyone's got any better ideas for things we can do, or ways they can help, we'd be glad to hear them, but we don't see the point of criticism that isn't backed up be better suggestions.]

See you there...

"...showing people that there are ways to live a fun life outside of (and in opposition to) capitalism"

A fun life 'outside'... which is called lifestylism, sometimes 'revoltionary cultism' (Huey P Newton). Innit.

lifestylism...

... is a pejorative term when it relates to people who do nothing, but adopt the cultural signifiers of people who do. Clearly, we are doing something. Are you? The implication of the above isn't to pretend that we can live in a manner genuinely divorced from capitalism (can understand how that impression might have been conveyed), but that we should practice alternatives to it in every sphere of our lives: including the way we eat, organise places of residence etc. None of this is a replacement for direct action, but is a corollary of it.

OK so...

Ooh! Pejorative! Signifiers! Seriously though, I don't want this conversation to degenerate further as this has happened (to others) before. I don't like punks and I hope you can see the irony of punks watching zombie fillums. To point is to genuinely radicalise... something that really bugs me, for example, is the stereotyping of the sixties revolutionary period into a slight cultural upheaval where the doors released a couple LPs, everyone tried acid and middle-class white capitalist women won their rights. How about a screening of the Weather Underground movie? Reading groups around this? Where are you again? (scrolls up page...)

...OK, I'll keep on checking your non-existent website then! Meantime, here's a 30-minute interview with former Weather Underground activist, and long-time US political prisoner David Gilbert. Well worth the download wait for 56k folks, honest!!
