The European Social Forum is coming to London!

Dear Friend,

The European Social Forum (ESF) will take place in London 14 - 17 October.

The ESF emerged from the spectacular success of the World Social Forum (www.wsfindia.org) which opened in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2001. Its first two gatherings in Florence (2002) and Paris (2003) attracted over 50,000 participants from across Europe and beyond.

It is a chance for people from around the world to come together to engage in debate, organise action and build networks to strengthen our movement.

The forum is created by and for the movements and is organised in accordance with the Charter of Principles of Porto Alegre. Visit www.fse-esf.org/en/charter.html

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

TICKETS for the ESF 2004 will be available online soon. Please see our website for details. www.fse-esf.org

ANY GROUP can SHAPE THE CONTENT of the ESF 2004 by proposing a seminar, workshop or cultural activity (see our website www.fse-esf.org). The deadline for proposals for meetings is the end of July. There is capacity for over 200 seminars but we are expecting many more to be proposed. All proposals will be collated and arrangements will be made for groups suggesting similar titles to club together. This is only one of the ways in which the ESF seeks to promote cooperation across European networks. Workshops can be put forward by individual groups and your group can also register for stall space at the ESF.

Whether you are an individual artist or from a large cultural institution, if your work shares a connection with any of the themes of the ESF, you may wish to consider participating. The ESF is an opportunity to showcase the incredible range of cultural activities on offer in the capital. Please contact  uksefculture@gn.apc.org.

Your organisation is also encouraged to help support and organise the event by AFFILIATING to the UK Organising Committee. The statement to sign, affiliation form and fee levels are also on our website (www.fse-esf.org/affiliation.html). This affiliation entitles you to fully participate in all meetings of the organising committee and working groups. Details of meetings are posted on the website.

If you have no financial resources, please do not be deterred: information on how to affiliate in this case can be obtained by contacting  ukesfoutreach@gn.apc.org . Model resolutions are available on the website to get your organisation affiliated.

We will be organising a huge team of INTERPRETERS, thousands of free and cheap ACCOMODATION places in London. Please contact  ukesfaccommodation@gn.apc.org or see our website for 'offer' forms.

If you would like to VOLUNTEER at the event, please contact  ukesfvolunteer@gn.apc.org

If you would like to have a STALL at the ESF, please contact  ukesfstalls@gn.apc.org

Leaflets, posters and contact lists to promote the event are available from the ESF office:  ukesfoffice@gn.apc.org or 020 8809 5347.

For information and ideas on bulding support for the ESF please contact  ukesfoutreach@gn.apc.org

For all other information see www.fse-esf.org or contact the main email address at  ukesfcommittee@gn.apc.org

In solidarity,

UK ESF Outreach Working Group.

BULLSHIT

20.07.2004 10:31

financed by a governmental organisation, co-opted by scab member of the party of government, this commerical enterprise - buying the right to participate, is the sincerest form of hypocrisy to spew forth from the authoritarian left.

As it stands, sinister political cult 'socialist action' are pulling all the strings for this event. Dirty your hands at your peril.

BULLSHIT YOURSELF

23.07.2004 19:10

Don't be such a cynical negative fuckwit. All ESFs and most WSFs have taken state money, whilst doing a pretty good job of not allowing the state to interfere in the proceedings.
I agree it's not perfect but it's still going to be well worth coming to.

Sure there are criticisms that can be raised but to dismiss and slag off the whole thing is totally wrong.

This is meant to be a gathering of the whole movement. This includes all the NGOs and academics and yes the trots too. Potentially it should include anarchists and all those into direct action but if you guys aren't interested in a dialogue with the wider movement for global justice / against corporate power then I reckon that's a real shame.

Please don't try to put people off. If you don't want to come then you don't have to but please don't try to rubbish the whole thing. Try and be a little bit constructive and bit less sectarian. Sectarianism is the bain of this movement it really is. Remember who the real enemy is.
