The modesty of a nude sculpture has been hidden by frosted glass in a gallery's window after complaints led to police intervention.

Police said the model at the A Gallery, in Wimbledon, south-west London, was deemed offensive under the Indecent Displays Act 1991.

Artist Marie White, 24, said she did not intend the piece, entitled This Is Me (Who Am I), to cause offence.

Scotland Yard said officers gave a man and woman "advice" at the gallery.

Ms White, a student at the Wimbledon School of Art, said: "She's not posing in a lewd, crude way so the reaction of males that they can't view a nude sculpture and not imprint the sexual aspect onto her, I find that quite surprising really.

"I'm surprised they can't just view her as a nude, as an artistic sculpture."

Gallery owner Fraser Kee Scott said they had put some eye-catching sculptures in the window, including a large screaming lady.

He said: "People drive past and it (the sculpture) gets their attention. I knew it would get attention, but I didn't know it would get this."

in my opinion it's a jolly decent display.

I've gone and looked at the BBCpage. My Eye went from the sculpture to Ms White in her red jersey, and back to the sculpture.
hmmm thought I.
this may be her "as she is now".
at 24 years of age, with quite wonderful breasts.
This won't be her in ten, twenty, thirty years time.
Those perfectly formed breasts will be hanging around her knees.
So-
If she keeps the representational sculpture which she has made
with obvious care to work material which is exceptionally lifelike,
then as the years pass, it will become a dorian gray like reminder of the beauty
her own youth. I feel sure, that after menopause she herself would become guilty
of implanting sexual meaning in consideration of those once perfectly formed breasts
that stopped traffic in south London.
Ms White if you're reading, this I hope is not "you" as you see yourself, otherwise growing old shall be difficult. You are much more. You're probably very intelligent too.
And maybe even have a great personality. But for the moment you will be filed away in my little male head, as possibly having jolly decent breasts that you allowed be displayed to the drivers of Wimbledon which demonstrates rather poor taste to my mind.

yuk - sexist crap

so any woman over the age of 30ish is automatically ugly with amazing gravity pulled down desending breasts then?

hopefully the police will hide all the old, ugly people behind smoked glass as well, to save the tender sensibilities of passing drivers polluting the streets.

Still an issue ?

It is surprising we continue to bother ourselves with the, "what is obscene" argument. Nobody will be able to define it in a way a law can be structered so let's all forget it and move on. The bigger issue is surely "Does anyone except Charles Sacchi buy Tracey Emin?"

heather you have attributed prejudiee without due cause.

at no point did I in my commentary suggest that older breasts are not attractive,
nor did I write anything which can be construed as sexist I merely suggested that giving her work the title "how i am", reduces her to a life size and life like model.
I also wrote that were she to keep such a work for a period of thirty years it would take on the "fetishised" memory function of Dorian Gray's (a fictional character of the novel by the same name by Oscar Wilde) portrait.

The sculpture is exceedingly life like. Ms white has a well developed coopers ligament which allows for her full breasts to hang in a way which is not only aesthetic but would be termed youthful and suggest to most anthropologists a certain fecundity.

However Coopers ligament slackens with age, and approximately 60% of women's coopers ligaments are not genetically designed to take the weight of modern breasts which have increased in size due to increased hormones intake over the last three generations. Thus we see more titties round your knees now Heather, than at any point in the history of womankind.

Breasts for you British really seem to be quite different from other cultures, such as that in Barcelona where I live. But I shan't dwell on your sexual neurosis, or the trite and boring tendancy in modern British art to play ironic games in representation of same. I will only muse that there is probably a certain debt to the Saatchi collection and that terribly dreary sensations collection.

So, we are to judge Ms White's work on what basis?
as representational? Are these breasts a faithful copy of the original?
Ms White's youthful and literally sculpted breasts were displayed by a male london art gallery in the window of his art gallery "to catch attention" and so they did.
Why do they catch attention? because they are lifelike.
And you poor british chums starved of breasts get excited by that.
Only Ms white and those who have seen her breasts may answer are they "really life-like", perhaps because in your country, you don't tend to see breasts except in representations such as "page 3" and of course sculpted in marble or other stone.
I am always intrigued by the I suppose "sexist" portrayal of plastic breasts which hen night goers wear here on their weekends. I may ask a Briton what it's all about sometime
But a point No stone statue has been covered for being "indecent" in a public place in England for a considerable period of time.
The sexuality of the statue [and it's observer] is adjusted by the material.
Ms white's material is deliberately lifelike. ¿is it not?
Thus in it's cultural context [contemporary British society] it is sexualised.
And with that, it becomes a concept to be debated in your contemporary british gender political terms.

Heather, it is not I, who is sexist.
It is your culture, the gallery owner, the drivers, Ms White and
quite probably you too.

GOD DAMN IT! You Brits have been getting away with indecency long enough! Now you have to drag it across our clean virgin Internet!
Don't make us declare war on you too!
