Oxford Uni Animal Labs demo report

PrimatePrisoners | 09.07.2004 13:49 | Animal Liberation | Oxford

Yesterday (Thursday) we had another of the regular demos against the new animal lab being built on South Parks Road in the centre of Oxford. 15 people turned up to keep up the noise and anger. For four hours two megaphones and airhorns kept up a constant noise, despite the bad weather.

The police were being low key for the most part, though their selective hearing when passer-bys hurled abuse was blatant. Nevertheless they did a fine job of escorting people off the premises of various of the surrounding University buildings.

Eventually their true nature just had to break through and they arrested a disabled person for playing a tape of the sounds of animal lab workers beating up a beagle puppy - the police were offended by the fact that one of the workers on the tape used the "F" word (gasp). So they arrested the protestor for section 5!

It wont break us - just makes us angrier! Oxford University has to realise that the more they build the laboratory the bigger the hole they are burying themselves in.

Many thanks to all the people expressing support, and to the various academic types who presumed that we were all stupid so wouldn't be able to out argue them succinctly - most ended up looking so silly they were reduced to telling us to get a job! And this from students...

More actions are planned for the month of July, including stuff at the Oxford Uni AGM this weekend, a fast next week and a national demo on 24th July.
