translation | 28.06.2004 13:51 | Anti-racism | Globalisation | World

A well-known human right activist and scientist, who worked in the fields of discrimination, nationalism and racism, was shot on Saturday,19th of june in his house in St. Petersburg.

Nikolai Girenko was co-worker in the museum for anthropology and ethnography, and professor for ethnology. He was well-known as head of the "Comission for minority rights" in the union of science and accomplished numerous studies to neo-nazi structures and skinhead groups in the Russian federation for authorities of Moskow and St.Petersburg. In these he warned that such groups are on the increase.
In front of the court he several times incriminated people, who were involved in racist violent attacks .

The underground organization "Government of the Republic of Russia" ( http://www.rusrepublic.ru/) declared itself responsible for the execution of the 64 year old on Wednesday (23rd of june).
According to this statement this execution was the revenge for his statements before court, with which he incriminated racists (see also:  http://www.amnesty.org.uk/deliver/document/15449.html).
The public prosecutor's office of St.Petersburg stated on Thursday that they investigate against the confessor of the murder.

This "government" seems to be close to the "party of the liberty", together they brutally beat up two anarchists and hurt them with weapons in Izhevsk on the 23rd of february. (see: Anarchist Black Cross Moscow:  http://www.enrager.net/hosted/caps/modules.php?name=News&file=article&si)
