Marks and Spencer Demo Update

Sid Arthur | 25.06.2004 10:36 | Anti-racism | London

Another decent demo outside Britain's biggest corporate sponsor of Israel.

We will soon be approaching our 4th year anniversay of demonstrating against Marks and Spencer, a protest which began in response and solidarity with the Al-Aqsa intifada. It's been 4 long years of organising and struggling, with putting up with pressure from the police, Zionists and more often than not, dispiriting apathy from the public. However, the struggle we have had here is nothing compared to the struggle of the Palestinian people. Every day the atrocities against them are being continued, every day more houses are demolished and yet more men, women and children are forced from their land.

It is difficult to maintain these weekly pickets, but maintain and continue them we must. It is essential that we keep up the struggle and build an effective Palistinian solidarity here in the U.K. Last nights picket was okay but I'd be lying if I said it was great. The Zionist opposition had dwindled to insignificance again and the police were low in numbers too and less forceful, but we need to buiild ourselves. There is a lot of sympathy for the Palestinians now, not just from the huge amounts of Arab visitors on Oxford St this time of year but also from the British public. A sense of the urgent and dire situation of the Palestinians is slowly being realised and this awareness needs to be harnessed and organised if we are to be successful in building a movement.

Your support is needed now as much as ever.
Boycott Marks and Spencer Oxford St Marble Arch, next and every Thursday from 6pm till 8pm.
Also, boycott Marks and Spencer Holloway (on corner of Holloway Rd and Seven Sisters Rd) this Saturday 12 till 2pm.

Victory to the Intifada!
