Stop the BNP rally in Sunderland
Sunderland Coalition Against Racism and Fascism | 12.06.2004 10:36 | Anti-racism
Sunderland came to its senses this week when voters turned away from the BNP in disgust. Pictures are of the 'Stop the BNP' rally held outside the count on Thursday evening. Ian Leadbitter, who was British National Party candidate in the Redhill ward of Sunderland, was arrested outside the count on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He didn't seem to like being called a Nazi and punched and kicked peaceful demonstrators before being carted off by the police.

5 BNP arrests after BBC documentary
20.07.2004 12:19
Five West Yorkshire men have been arrested following a BBC documentary on the British National Party.
Police say a 23-year-old from Bradford is being questioned about racially aggravated public order offences.
A Bradford man, 51, is being questioned about racially aggravated harrassment and a 45-year-old Bradford man was held on suspicion of possessing a firearm.
Two Keighley men, aged 35 and 40, are being questioned over conspiracy to commit criminal damage.
Motion from MPs
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "As part of the inquiry launched following the BBC programme, The Secret Agent, police have now arrested five men.
"West Yorkshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service are continuing to liaise closely as part of the ongoing investigation."
The arrests came as 43 MPs, including former cabinet ministers Peter Mandelson and Frank Dobson, backed a motion saying that police must take action against anyone found to have committed a crime in relation to the documentary.
They also called on four BNP members of Bradford Council to resign, arguing that their victories last month were gained "by deception".
The MPs said the BNP members should fight by-elections under what they called "their true colours".
