Anti War/Anti G8 Jam held in Cardiff....

Last Saturday a section of the main shopping street in cardiff was reclaimed by members of the Cardiff Social Forum*, and turned into an anti corporate, pro-peace space for the afternoon.
Large banners were draped everywhere, Hundreds of Beanburgers were cooked and given out to the public, a small amp and mic was set up for folk to play music, street-theatre was performed, and stalls handing out anti-G8 and anti-occupation flyers were set up.
A chilled out atmosphere followed as a number of local radical musicians played ther own music, and people sat around on the floor in groups, or handed out flyers to surprised but receptive passers by. Many people joined the party for peace, especially when we were all treated to a stunning display from a Cardiff-based capoeira group towards the end of the afternoon.
Hundreds of people joined the event throughout the afternoon.
Cops and city centre managers kept their distance, more concerned with policing the fuel protest that noisilly rolled through town around 2pm.
The Friends of the Earth contingent of the Cardiff Social Forum went and made their own fuel protest by greeting the truckers with a huge banner reading 'Truck off you tankers!!'
After an afternoon of politics, food and lively protest, around 100 of those who were left moved on to the park to carry on the festivities, with music, drinks and more capoeira.
An excellent day all round.

*Cardiff Social Forum was launched out of the South Wales Coalition to Stop The War in May 2003. Modelled on the Italian social forums which built the anti-G8 demo in Genoa, it is a network of activists for social justice and against global corporate domination. The forum is a space for debate and education, but also a body which plans actions and organises practical workshops. It is non-sectarian and democratic in its methods and outlook (decisions are made by consensus) and open to all individuals and groups who share its aims.
