An immigration reception centre is to close in two years' time to make way for a 6,000-home development.
The Home Office has confirmed the fast-track facility at Oakington in Cambridgeshire will close in 2006.
Staff at the centre, which opened in 1999 on a short-term lease, are likely to be redeployed to similar facilities.
Nearby residents said there were mixed feelings about the closure. Many are concerned about the size of the new housing scheme which starts in 2006.
