OutRage! welcomes London Lesbian and Gay Museum

OutRage! News Service | 08.06.2004 07:42 | Culture | Education | Gender | London

OutRage! is delighted to hear that there is so much support for the museum. The lives and stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have been largely ignored and even written out of the ‘official’ history books. Much of history has been ‘sanitised’ of our queer lives and this project will be an invaluable resource in reclaiming much of it.

London – Gay Human Rights group OutRage! welcomes proposals for a lesbian and gay museum for London.

The idea was originally proposed by Peter Tatchell and taken up by Green Party candidate Darren Johnson, but now has the backing of both the Labour and Tory Mayoral candidates as well.

“London's lesbian and gay community has a fascinating, hidden history spanning more than four centuries. The museum could display everything from eighteenth century molly house artefacts, to badges and placards from the campaign to repeal Section 28,” says Mr Tatchell

"The museum would not only document the lives and experiences of lesbian and
gay Londoners, but also provide administrative, archive and exhibition space
for the Hall-Carpenter Archives and the Lesbian & Gay News Archive", added
Tatchell.

In addition to documenting and collating this history, the museum would provide community meeting space and a venue for events like art exhibitions.

“OutRage! is delighted to hear that there is so much support for the museum” said spokesperson Brett Lock, “the lives and stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have been largely ignored and even written out of the ‘official’ history books. Much of history has been ‘sanitised’ of our queer lives and this project will be an invaluable resource in reclaiming much of it.”

"We need to take care of the future as much as remembering the past. I think it would be a fantastic place for people just coming out to have access to the community groups that might meet there. It would mean that their 'first contact' with their community would be positive and affirming rather than with the "the scene", which is often a little intimidating and alienating" he adds.

OutRage! also believes that efforts to acquire the old Bow Street Police Station, a nineteenth century Grade II listed building is most appropriate. It was the police station where Oscar Wilde was charged and held after his arrest in 1895.

“It is fitting and suitably ironic that the building in which one of the most notorious persecutions in gay history began might soon be the place where queer history is remembered – and celebrated,” says Lock.

Better than all the other boring museums put together!

08.06.2004 10:10

Indeed this is an excellent intiative to help counter homophobia and celebrate what gay culture has to contribute to society as a whole

I saw some spod from the UKIP on Sky news last night ranting on about "wasting public funds" and how it's an "insult to family values", in their typical narrow-minded moronism!! Assuming the UKIP get a vote of the size all the pundits are predicting, they and more likely tha BNP, could potentially start sturring shit up about this. I say "bring em on!". This could give us a great rallying point for united action after the election.

I will certainly be paying this place a visit when it is open.

Good stuff!

Gay Museum?

Was it born gay? LOL!!

Seriously though, I had hoped news of this would be kept out of the media until after the elections, what with all the homophbia that is being stirred up.

Why duck the issue??

...GW??

Like I said: "Bring em on"!!

If the UKIP/BNP wanna start building an election campaign about this then it is a very easily winnable argument I think?? -Billions for war in Iraq, a few quid for a gay museum -which is the better contribution to humanity?? No reason we should duck issues when there are very simple, winnable arguments to be had?? Ok, such arguments don't cut much with people living in run down inner city areas, but it's not as if the government are gonna give the money to the poor if they don't build the museum is it?? If they don't build the museum, London misses out on a great idea and ...well the government just line their pockets with the cash instead -or buy more arms -or use their new found strength to close down schools and hospitals!! Be imaginative man!

An Idea that Needs to Be Developed

08.06.2004 12:50

Well, although it sticks in the craw of leftie like me to say so, it just goes to show how society has changed for the better when even the Conservative candidate agrees that the gay museum would be a good idea. It makes me wonder about widening this concept further. Not because I want to water down a gay museum - gay Londoners have contributed so much to the city's history that they have every right to an educational forum. I'm wondering whether the progressive movement(s)- by which I mean feminists, socialists, anarchists, the anti-fascists, direct action squatters etc - could follow this example. Too few people are aware of our shared radical history. The Peasant's Revolt, Levellers, Diggers, Chartists, Suffragists ... right up to the Miners Strike and through to the present day. If we can maintain archives like the Kate Sharpley Archive, then would it be so much of a step to establish a radical 'museum' for the capital? What do you lot reckon?

Thanks and solidarity
