Social Centre latest

Leeds ARC | 27.05.2004 12:48 | Free Spaces

The planning for Leeds Social Centre is well underway. Another well attended meeting was held on Thursday 20th May. Discussions included possible building, the funding proposal and planning and licensing issues.

The next Social Centre planning meeting will be held on Thursday 10th June at the Packhorse Pub, Woodhouse Lane at 7pm. This will be followed by a social event including the screening of "The revolution will not be televised" - a documentary about the Venezuealan coup at 9pm.

Please come along and bring ideas and inspiration

The other topic of discussion at the last meeting were possible names for the centre. It was agreed that indymedia could be used as a space to suggest names anonymously.

Below are some names suggested at the meeting, please add your suggestions

RESPIRE
ANOTHER WORLD
PROPER GANDER

how about 'respiration' - a place to breathe in the city...?
:-)

or if we can't make a decision, 'leeds social centre' seems quite good to me

how about 'the sell-out', or 'the aquiescence', or 'the co-opt', or 'the recuperate'. either of the last two would be good because co-opt could be a sort of pun on co-op or you could spell 'recuperate' 'recuper8' to give it a youth speak feel. Or maybe you could call it 'Despire' which has the double meaing of being slightly reminiscent of the words 'despise' and 'despair' and also connotes the death of Leeds'radical squatted social centre project 'Aspire'.

Title

02.06.2004 19:08

Some combination (name and "strapline") of "The ghetto" and "the world turns". The first bit is, we hope, ironical. The second is what we want to do. "The ghetto" is also the title of an Elvis Presley song and "the world turns" is a line from the song.

hey what about...

..."cafe rouge et noir" ? apart from its obvious meaning, it would also work as a piss-taker for cafe rouge, which is close to the proposed building

antonymous

or...

or how about 'cafe rouge et jaune' as a testement to the left-liberal reformism that underpins it?

Aspire

20.06.2004 16:58

referring to the previous explanation of what people want the leeds social centre to be, i am really fucking angry about the comment that Aspire was an essential precursor to the planned leeds social centre. it was not a fucking precursor to a legal structure. it was not ever intended to move onwards and upwards, to be promoted to legal status, as this comment implies. aspire was and is a radical autonomous space which has NOTHING in common with this new project and exists purely for itself.

Naming is not worth getting upset about

Making this new space more "legit" to me is a positive thing. It isn't the same as Aspire and I don't think it's trying to be.
But Aspire helped develop the culture in which it can grow, which is a really positive thing. Aspire should continue to be what it is, and be proud of itself. It's fantastic.
This new space wants to work in a new way. I think it will appeal to a differing range of folk and, if it becomes a very popular space, reach new people. It is also fantastic, just different.
So I, for one, would not call it Respire, or any other "Aspire" derivative, and I would applaud it for what it is. Now, how can I get involved?

the naming game

How about:

'SEL OWT' or

'Yorkshire Conservative Club' (some legal difficulties maybe there but that doesn't worry this lot).

or

'Sandinista 2'

or

Some thing sutiable post millennial, a symbol perhaps or NO NAME after guru Klein.
