Gentleman's club needs your support!

Peppermint Elephant | 19.05.2004 16:21 | Sheffield

Millions of hard working businessmen have found much needed relief from the daily stresses of their involvment with capitalism (and a wife that doesn't understand them!) at Spearmint Rhino around the world... but Sheffield's infamous Gentleman's Club located in the city centre made an application for renewal of its entertainment licence ("dancing" etc.) on 5th May 2004.

If you want to challenge the right to Spearmint Rhino remaining in Sheffield (60 Brown Street, S1 2BS), write a letter to:

Sheffield City Council,
Licensing General Section,
Town Hall
Sheffield
S1 2HH

letters should arrive by 27th May.

Spearmint Rhino launchED itself in Sheffield 18 months ago after much controversy, applications such as this are an opportunity to stick the boot into an industry based on exploitation (of pissed up males on stag nights)...!

HAPPY HUNTING!!

a license to censor?

It sounds like you want to take away the license to decide where we can go and what we can see. I honestly thought we'd moved on from that. As you say, in these places the main exploitation that goes on is of "of pissed up males on stag nights", so what is the problem?
In capitalism everything is for sale, I was going to say including sex but its not as if anything like that goes on in these places, certainly not in the UK! Surely taking licenses away from these joints is best left to religious bigots. People have the right to work as strippers, prostitutes, whatever. If there's exploitation going on and the employees seek our solidarity then we should show in the way they best suggest, otherwise just let it all hang out.

a lot of tyhe main commercial places can be unionised by the gmb as the international sex workers union (iswu)has emalgamated with the gmb (five mins walk from the rhino!).

acceptable face of female exploitation?

kind of in response to Libertarian: isn't there a hipocrisy in the fact that porn is, to some extent, shunned by society (though obviously a lucrative industry) but mags like FHM and Loaded are an "acceptable" face of girly mag culture, even reinforcing patriarchal gender shit. Can the same be said of clubs like Dancing Dollar and spearmint Rhino? thing is, are the women who work these places aware of unionsation?
