I didn't think I ought to post this video on here and my internal debate about posting a link has been negated by 'dh'.

I have seen the video and as horrific as it is, I feel I ought to point out some inconsistencies in the timecode.

After the opening few seconds there is a time code jump from 13:26:27 to 2:18:33

Seconds later there is another jump from 2:18:43 to 2:40:32

Finally, and perhaps most significantly, after the captors' diatribe they all begin shouting and grab Nicholas Berg. There is then a timecode jump from 2:44:12 to 13:45:47 when there are shaky blurred close-ups of the attack.

It is possible that the captors had two cameras, at least one of which had the wrong time set which would explain why there are two jumps of around 11 hours. The remaining jump of approximately 22 minutes would very likely be nothing more than a pause.

I am not suggesting that this is not genuine. Simply that I noticed these possible irregularities.

The audio alone, with the butchers whooping and yelping 'Allahu Akbar' over the innocent man's screams as they slowly saw his head off, would have turned even an SS officer's stomach. Of course, this was caused by the abuse at Abu Ghraib - the equivalence between making someone wear panties on their head and hacking someone's head off with a knife is obvious.

Berg was a strong supporter of the war, and a strong supporter of Bush. He was there to drum up business. Enough said.

While this is certainly a true statement, one also has to consider the cultural implications of forcing arab men to masturbate/ be naked in front of each other, in front of women, forced to simulate group sex etc. This is the worst kind of humiliation that an arab man can be exposed to. The timecode 'error' on the video could just be a re-editing of the footage. If you rea-arrange the footage, we get the killer's statement, followed by the pulling of knife and the throwing of Berg to the ground. If we then accept that a new battery or tape was used or the timecode simply reset, we then have Berg's seated statement, and he is then thrown to the ground and murdered.

The footage was then re-edited to give Berg's statement first, then the killer's speech, then the murder.

This begs two questions, on why the editing - Is the speech reader pulling the knife actually the murderer ? Was it deliberately scripted to give the continuity we get ? But does it matter at all; we can see this was a calculated act, and the video is just part of it.

Parents agonize over their son missing in Iraq

The last time Nick Berg called home, he was OK.

He had been released from the prison where he had been held for 13 days by Iraqi police for reasons he said he did not know.

He had made his way from Mosul to his Baghdad hotel.

He was finished with being an independent civilian contractor and was coming home to West Chester.

That was April 9.

And then nothing.

But by then, hostilities in Iraq had escalated, and Michael Berg said they have not heard from their son since.The Bergs have hounded the State Department, the FBI and the International Committee of the Red Cross, seeking any shred of information.

Michael Berg said the State Department sent an official to Nick Berg's hotel, where an employee told the official they had not heard of him.

The Bergs hired a private investigator, who talked to an American hotel guest who said he remembered Nick Berg, his father said.

So now, they are waiting. Sometimes, they tell themselves their son "is a resourceful fellow who can take care of himself," Michael Berg said. Nick's friends call and say the same thing.

"Other times we think perhaps he was dead on April 10," Michael Berg said.

"My worst fear is that I'll never hear anything."

Captors say they offered exchange for Abu Ghraib prisoners


He said Berg's family learned about his death Monday and is devastated by the news. The family has asked the State Department to release the body as soon as possible, he said.

Berg's family told The Associated Press that they knew he had been decapitated but weren't aware of the details.

"I knew he was decapitated before," Michael Berg told the AP. "That manner is preferable to a long and torturous death. But I didn't want it to become public."

Suzanne Berg said her son was in Iraq as an independent businessman.

"He had this idea that he could help rebuild the infrastructure," she told the AP.

The Berg family was told by the State Department that Nicholas' body is in Kuwait and may arrive in the United States as early as Wednesday.

One government official said Berg had earlier been arrested by Iraqi police in a sweep and detained by coalition authorities. Those authorities contacted the FBI, which interviewed Berg, the source said.

Berg was released when authorities realized he was in Iraq legally, the source said. He was in the process of leaving Iraq when he was taken captive by insurgents.

The FBI confirmed that agents also interviewed Berg's parents about why he was in Iraq.

"The agency had been asked to interview the parents regarding Mr. Berg's purpose in Iraq," FBI spokeswoman Jerri Williams said without elaborating.

In early April, Berg's parents filed suit against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, saying their son was being held by the U.S. military without merit. However, just days after it was filed, the suit was declared moot.

Rep. Jim Gerlach, who represents Berg's hometown, said he had spoken with the family and they are "very, very much emotionally traumatized by this death. Yet at the same time, they are very strong and they are very composed."

He said the family also wants to "find out a lot more information" about what happened between the time Berg was released by authorities and when he was taken hostage.

"They are very interested in finding out more about those circumstances," Gerlach told CNN.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- The U.S.-led coalition is denying some claims by the family of Nick Berg, the American civilian from Philadelphia who was shown on videotape being beheaded by militants in Iraq.

Coalition spokesman Dan Senor said Berg was never in U.S. custody. But he said Berg had been detained for a time by Iraqi police in the northern city of Mosul. Senor said the FBI met with Berg several times to find out what he was doing in Iraq.

Senor said as far as he knows, Berg was never "under the jurisdiction or detention of coalition forces." Asked for details about Berg's last weeks in Iraq, Senor said officials are trying to "piece all this together."

Nick Berg's father, Michael Berg, is putting some of the blame for his son's death at the feet of the U.S. government.

He said his son might have been able to leave the country before the violence worsened had he not been held for so long.

An American civilian who was beheaded in a grisly video posted on an al-Qaida-linked Web site had been warned to leave Iraq but refused, U.S. officials said Wednesday. The masked men who butchered him claimed they were angered by coalition abuses of Iraqi prisoners.
Nick Berg, 26, of West Chester, Pa., was never under U.S. custody despite claims from his family, coalition spokesman Dan Senor said Wednesday.

Berg's body was found near a highway overpass in Baghdad on Saturday, the same day he was beheaded, a U.S. official said.
The video then cuts to Berg sitting on the floor, his hands tied behind his back, flanked by the masked men, as a statement is read in Arabic. Berg sits still during the statement, facing the camera, occasionally raising his shoulders.

After the statement, the assailant directly behind Berg takes a large knife from under his clothing while another pulls Berg onto his side. The tape shows assailants thrusting the knife through his neck. A scream sounds before the men cut Berg's head off, repeatedly shouting "Allahu Akbar!" _ or "God is great."

They then hold the head out before the camera.

The video is of poor quality, and its time stamp seems to show an 11-hour lapse between when the assailants finish their statement and push Berg down, to when they behead him. That suggests a delay between those two portions of tape posted on the Web site.

Berg attended Cornell University, Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Oklahoma, where he got involved in rigging electronics equipment while working for the maintenance department, his father said. He helped set up equipment at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in 2000.

While at Cornell, he traveled to Ghana to teach villagers how to make bricks out of minimal material. His father said Berg returned from Ghana with only the clothes on his back and emaciated because he gave away most of his food.

Michael Berg said his son saw his trip to Iraq as an adventure in line with his desire to help others.

Berg's family said they were informed by the State Department on Monday that he was found dead.


Last month, Iraqi militants videotaped the killing of Italian hostage Fabrizio Quattrocchi, but the Arab TV network Al-Jazeera refused to air it because it was too graphic.

Why do people try to make excuses for this kind of behaviour, ie. say that it was timed to coincide with other events, say that he deserves because he is American, etc? Why not just accept that murder is always wrong, whether the innocent person is American or Iraqi or whatever?

Video Edits Are Us, if you read my post you would see that a bad edit was one of the possibilities I suggested (in the title). However, I too am an editor and perhaps I ought to apologise for using the expression 'time code'. Perhaps I ought to have said 'time stamp', because the indication in the video is not of the tape used (no tapes - even in LP - can last 13+ hours).

No, it is an indication of the time the video was shot. Even if the battery is removed (tape removal would not affect this) the clocks normally have a back-up battery. If the back-up battery fails, the clock would normally return to 00:00:00 and in most cases flash until reset. Even if this is not the case, there is then a greater discrepancy of 13+ hours (not the 11+ I suggested). If you can bear to watch this again, it implies (unless there is a second camera) that either 11+ or 13+ hours elapse between Berg first being grabbed and his beheading.

Anyway, why none of the television news crews have not spotted this? Perhaps I only spotted it because I couldn't bear to watch what was happening.

The man accused of murdering Berg, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, is linked in a number of reports to Abu Qatada: both men operated at the top of a terrorist group called al-Tawhid, active in England.

Al-Tawhid has planned to overthrow the monarchy of Jordan and install an Islam caliphate. In fact, Zarkawi once served seven years in a Jordanian prison for just such a plan.

Well, it turns out that Abu Qatada had been exposed as a asset of British intelligence--MI5.

A Jordanian, Qatada arrived in Britain with a forged passport in 1993 claiming asylum. Jordan told Britain he had been convicted of terror attacks in Amman seven months before September 11.

Spanish investigators produced evidence of how a militant in custody in Madrid - Abu Dahdah - had visited the cleric [Abu Qatda] more than 25 times, bringing money and recruits.

The assurance that Abu Qatada has merely been a clever man who fooled MI5 is a normal limited hangout: "He told us he could help us capture terrorists, and we fell for it."

The truth usually turns out to be: "We recruited him as an asset and we offered him protection."

And the even deeper truth: "We are in the business of fomenting controlled terrorism, and to do that we use assets. To employ a cutout like Abu Qatada in that goal would also suggest that his high-level al-Tawhid associate, Zarqawi, the man accused of murdering Nick Berg, has been ultilized in the same game.

Indeed, as is now being pointed out by others, how did Nick Berg smoothly go from being detained by the US military to being held by Zarqawi and his thugs?

Iraq is not a small town like Hicksville. Are we supposed to believe that Berg, after his release from a US military facility, walked around with a big sign on his chest that said I'M LOOKING FOR ZARQAWI?

The positive propaganda benefit of Berg's brutal murder to the US effort in Iraq, right in the middle of the Iraqi-prisoner torture scandal, is obvious.

On March 24, Nick was picked up by the Iraqi police in Mosul and held for
questioning for no apparent reason. He was subsequently detained by the
U.S. military and interrogated by the FBI until his release on April 6. No
reason was ever given for holding him for these 13 days. Immediately upon
his release he emailed the family and proceeded south to Baghdad where he
was staying at the Al Fanar Hotel.

On April 9 he called us and said that he was seeking a safe route out of the
country either through Jordan, or possibly Turkey. Most of the major routes
were closed due to military action around Fallujah. Since that time we have
had no contact with our son. No one we know in Iraq has seen or spoken to
him, and we know that he has not accessed his email. We are extremely
worried about his safety. We are asking anyone who has seen Nick or knows
anything about his whereabouts to come forward and give us this information
so that he can be safely brought home.

We extend our sympathies to all of the many families who are in the same
situation.

To all you religious fanatics of the world - Christians, Jews, Moslims, and all the rest - all of you: Isn't it wonderful what you do in the name of God? Moslims kill pregnant women and little children in the name of Allah. Christians invade Iraq after praying to God. Jews fight Arabs over land "given to them by God."

We will all be better off when you leave your superstitions behind and join the real world. Judging by what you do in the name of God, I have to say: If your God is a loving God, then God is no better than your Satan.

I came accross this site and I wanted to say a few words.

First, it was in the United States that planes were flown into buildings and 3000 innocent Americans were killed. Men, women, and children all died that day. Perhaps you've forgotten. I live close to New York and it was a day that I will never forget.

Innocent Americans have been killed long before the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Americans have been beheaded long before the Iraq war (Danny Pearl).

I see past articles that blame Christians, like me. Many people on this site seem to be focusing on making fun of my faith. It seem that whenever an American or Christianity is down, everyone smells the blood and loves to attack.

As an American, I am ashamed of what took place in the prison. But most Americans are outraged and ashamed. Almost the entire United States military is outraged and we are doing what we can to correct it.

When some "Christian" claiming person blows up an abortion clinic, I am outraged and so are most in my faith.

So, I sit here and wonder why so many of you hate me so much? Why you hate a country that has done so much good in this world? Perhaps...it is because we really don't hate you. Perhaps it is because people like me really do care and really want to do good.

I am proud to be an American and proud of Bush and the military. The United States Of America will lick its wounds and continued to do what we do best...succeed!

Then I read the comments about americans like "put them in a stadium in texas and carpet bomb them" Thats horrible to think that you would put yourselves in the same boat as the ones you accuse of needless killing. The video of Berg was shown on our television stations. It was horrible, so was the beatings that our troops gave their prisoners. But if you think that we are in this war just to kill people and be a big shot and take oil or whatever, then why didn't our military just go in and level Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, etc., and kill everyone, man woman and child? If Nick Berg was looking to set up or establish some kind of free radio in Iraq he was very naive. Aside from the generally disinterested male dominated Islamic leaders in such a proposal, he would have been stepping on Clear Channels' toes. I don't think Nick should have been beheaded for this, no one should, but how did he think this idea would be received by either the Iraqis or the coalition forces? It seems a little foolish to me, not unlike wearing a white hood and cape through Harlem.
If America is so keen on peace in the middle east, why doesn't America just make Florida Israel? It's warm, sunny and already has a large jewish population. Jerusalem, of course, would have to be levelled because as the world has shown it can't peacefully be shared. Leveling Jerusalem seems to be a good solution on the premise of a very simple idea we all learn as children which is that if we all can't play nicely then we can't play at all.

A female soldier at the centre of the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal was photographed having sex with other military guards, sometimes in front of detainees, senators said today.

Private First Class Lynndie England has already become the face of the scandal, shown in pictures pointing at a naked Iraqi and holding another by a leash.

She has claimed she was following orders from senior personnel and the photos were used to terrify other inmates into talking.

But unpublished photographs show Pte England engaged in sex acts with other soldiers, some senators told NBC.

The 100 senators were able to view hundreds of sickening pictures of prisoner abuse last night - images which the Pentagon now say will not be made publicly available.

"She was having sex with numerous partners. It appeared to be consensual," said one senator.

"Almost everybody was naked all the time," another said.

Other senators branded the images of abuse at Abu Ghraib prison, near Baghdad, "disgusting".

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden said: "I expected that these pictures would be very hard on the stomach lining and it was significantly worse than anything that I had anticipated.

"Take the worse case and multiply it several times over," he added.

Some snaps showed Iraqi women commanded to expose their breasts.

"I don't know how the hell these people got into our army," said Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, from Colorado.

"There were several pictures of Iraqi women who were disrobed or putting their shirts up.

"They were not smiling in the pictures, that's for sure. But it didn't look like they had been beaten or hurt."

"It was pretty disgusting, not what you'd expect from Americans," said Senator Norm Coleman.

"There was lots of sexual stuff - not of the Iraqis, but of our troops."

Pte England went on American television yesterday in a bid to defend herself. She said she was following orders when commanded to appear in photographs.

She told the KCNC-TV station: "I was instructed by persons in higher rank to stand there and hold this leash and look at the camera."

The reservist said the pictures were intended to put psychological pressure on the Iraqi prisoners to talk.

She said military intelligence officers would tell the prison guards: "This is working. Keep doing it. It's getting what we need."

She said: "We think everything was justified, because we were instructed to do this and to do that."

Pte England, is a petite 21-year-old from a trailer home in West Virginia.

According to some reports, England is engaged to, and carrying the baby of, Specialist Charles Graner, 35, who faces a possible court martial on criminal charges of maltreatment and indecent acts.

She was trained as an administrator and was sent to the Abu Ghraib centre to keep prisoner records.

Pte England, who wants to study to be a meteorologist, signed up for the Army at 17, before she had graduated from high school.

She is a cat-lover and sent money from her Army pay for her two sisters' newborn babies, her family said.

Meanwhile, further evidence of soldiers mistreating Iraqi detainees came to light in a military prison guard's video diary.

The unidentified female soldier said of the deaths of two inmates: "Who cares? That's two less for me to worry about."

Other soldiers are seen on the CBS 60 Minutes II programme, detailing poor conditions and overcrowding at Abu Ghraib and the Camp Bucca prison in Southern Iraq.

Two more soldiers are to be court martialled over the prisoner abuse scandal, it was announced yesterday.

Sergeant Javal Davis, 26, of Maryland, and Staff Sergeant Ivan "Chip" Frederick of Buckingham, Virginia, would face general courts martial, said US military spokesman Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt.

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, making a surprise visit to the Iraqi prison at the centre of the abuse scandal, said lawyers were advising the Pentagon not to publicly release any more photographs of Iraqi prisoners being treated badly by US soldiers.

He dismissed as "garbage" any suggestion the Pentagon tried to cover up the prison abuse.

After meetings in Baghdad, Rumsfeld travelled to the Abu Ghraib prison.

Speaking about the unpublished photographs, he said: "As far as I'm concerned, I'd be happy to release them all to the public and to get it behind us.

"But at the present time I don't know anyone in the legal shop in any element of the government that is recommending that."

After giving it much thought I decided to actually watch the video.

My intial impression whilst actually watching it was that the killing was indeed real. However, upon objectively considering what I had observed it appears too many things that simply don't add up.

For example, I once unexpectedly saw a film of a pig being killed by having it's throat cut open and upon reflection it was far more disturding than that video. The pigs body jolted uncontrolably, as perhaps you would expect. (The next time you see a BNP supporter grab the shit by the windpipe and give a little squeeze - you'll see what I mean.) Seriously though, simple things like the complete lack of any sighn of blood pressure raise immediate concern. Besides, you'd at least think there would be SOME blood comming from the airways of the mouth or nose.

It's almost as if someone somewhere has said I'll give you an image that will change peoples perceptions. Hence, given the timing of this video and the way it has been used to censor American abuse allegations, and inflame Arab hatered, I would logicaly conclude it was created and produced in a timely responce to the 'image' war currently taking place withing the media. If so, for the sake of humanity, I only hope that it was a prosthetic dummie, rather than a recently decesed person.
