IndyMedia Censorship!

Zinfandel | 05.05.2004 14:31 | Anti-militarism | Repression | London

IndyMedia - what is the Indy in IndyMedia short for? Indignant? Indistinguishable (from the other 'free' press)? Indoctrinated (by political correctness)? I thought it was supposed to be 'Independent'. Independent in thought and Independent of editorial influence. If you can't answer this accusation without reference to a page of unfathomable shite - what is the point of taking the time to compose and upload any article that can be removed at a whim?

Twice articles have been removed from this newswire - evidently because somebody doesn't like the subject matter, i.e. pornography. Not that these articles were in any way supporting pornography. They were questioning the depraved morality and new depths to which it has sunk.

So, the issue of sexual exploitation of women isn't news? Perhaps because it has been going on for thousands of years, it isn't. But this issue is, and very relevent.

So, go ahead, remove this article, Mr. Berlusconi!

The claim that indymedia is censoring stuff comes up at regular intervals and indeed there are often reasons to raise the issue. However, before shouting 'censorship' it is important to bear a couple of things in mind.

1. Indymedia does not delete articles. The articles which you might consider 'censored' are simply removed from the newswire that appears on the front page. All these 'hiden' articles are still available to read by those people that wish to read the stuff which has been considered to fall outside of the editorial guidelines.

2. The editorial guidelines are open to interpretation and there are many different people working at different times on clearing the newswire of posts which fall outside of the guidelines. This means that sometimes articles are hidden by somebody and somebody else disagrees. When this happens, the issue is discussed on an open email list and the hiden article may be put back on the newswire.

So. If you disagree with the hiding of a post, it is far more useful to raise the issue on the mailing list than to complain here in the newswire where it may go unnoticed. It would also help a lot if you actually provided a link to the articles in question so people could judge for themselves rather than take your word for it that the articles were approbriate.

Indymedia is not perfect - far from it. But it is 'our' media and WE ARE ALL INDYMEDIA!
If you think there is a problem, don't just moan about it, get involved...
