The photoshopping of the photos of torture by US officers in Baghdad--- cross cutting with pornographic photographs -- is an attempt to trivialize the evidence of a war crime.

i am unsure whether to believe those pictures myself. there are porn sites with staged pics of US soldiers "in Iraq" and "prisoners", because sadly, there is great demand for them. apparently many men are getting their jollies from such photos. i think these photos might be from one of these porn sites.

however, although those particular pics are likely staged, we know that it is going on. We know that without law Iraq has become a terribly scary place for women and girls - there have been hundreds of abductions and rape reports, and there are likely to be several times that in women who didnt report the incidents. we know that women and girls are being sold out of Iraq. we also know that women have been being taken prisoner by the US, sometimes to 'flush out' their relatives. Women who have emerged from the prisons have talked about rape and other assaults.

I imagine that there are photos available of such incidents too, but the media has probably decided not to use them. Its one thing to see 'guilty' men piled up, posing in sexual positions, being tortured, but I cant imagine the newspapers printing pictures of Iraqi women being forced to undergo that sort of thing. It might be a step too far?? maybe im wrong.

BTW, its also bothering me that the "sex position" shots, both from the US and Uk soldiers, are always referred to as just Posing, Mimicking sex. IMO its highly unlikely that these are merely 'posed' pictures - these men are being sexually assaulted and raped. Why do we have to pretend its just 'posing'??

The reality of any conflict is that brutality takes over and becomes the norm. Oh but not in our army i hear British commanders and politicians shout. We are a thoroughly modern army that fights with morality and concern!!!!!! The powers that be would have us believe they are the military wing of Amnesty International! Colonel Bob Stewart Ex British Commander of UNPROFPR in Bosnia actually said on TV this morning in response to the allegations of torture that the "British army train their men to be aggressive but also to care about the enemy when captured" If we swallow this absurdity then we are all doomed to more wars and plenty of them. Well Bob obviously you did not get your hands dirty in Bosnia to make such a bizarre statement. As an ex Volunteer with the Bosnian Croatian army in 1992 i can vouch that such morality affects very few men on the frontlines. When you catch the bugger that has been trying to blow your head of all morning sitting him down for a cup tea is the last thing on your adrenalin soaked mind! The "we fight by very strict rules" are yet more veneered words to make war acceptable to the general public. It astounds me that this "outrage" of doctored photographs is even being debated. The reality is a forgone conclusion. That the US army and CIA inparticular trains the majority of torturers world wide seems not to have been linked to these "allegations". I'm sure the Daily Mirror has some good motives given its opposition of the war but the downside of this is that governments and armies actually get to debate whether the world is round, when we all know it is. There are many who will be affected by this debate and whether they believe the photos to be doctored or not will have a seed planted that maybe we do really care about our so called enemies. Yet another step towards the acceptance of a war that is (like most) barbaric, brutal, and illegitimate.

On the subject of faked photos, I'm getting inclined to believe the UK squaddies one is a put on,even though the idea is promoted generally by supporters of the invasion - see Eammon McCann's analysis in the Guardian, - and the general consensus appears to be that these appear to be derived from Military 'Intelligence'.
Now why would MI do this? To provide the sappers with violent racist porn? Or simply to provide a trigger for more outrage and more chaos in the middle east
