As for the question 'what is white?' or 'what is black' - the answer is, in this context, the groups that will be barred from moving into these new homes by the apartheid regime in Tower Hamlets.

Why don't you go to Hackney and complain about the fact that there are virtually no non-christian secondary schools. Are you an English convert? I ask because you seem to have some problems reading English - perfectly understandable if you come from a different background, but if not, you should make more of an effort with your comprehension skills. I pointed out that these facilities are for Bangladeshi Muslims ONLY. I also pointed out that the categories are being made by the apartheid regime in Tower Hamlets. But, if you need it spelling out, they're saying that ANYONE WHO ISN'T A BANGLADESHI MUSLIM IS NOT WELCOME.

A new centre being built to provide care to Asian and Bangladeshi elderly people has been named Sonali Gardens, it was announced this week.

Sonali Gardens will consist of a day care centre and an extra care sheltered housing scheme. It will provide ablution, prayer and meal facilities appropriate to the religious and cultural needs of its service users.

The extra care unit will consist of 40 self-contained flats for single people and married couples.

Residents will receive personal care and support from trained staff, enabling them to live as independently as possible. A neighbouring day centre will offer social activities and specialist support to up to 30 people a day, as well as providing transport to and from their homes.
Both units will offer access to a range of services and facilities such as medical care and on-site hairdressing.

Lead councillor for social services Sirajul Islam said: “Sonali Gardens will provide high quality care and support for elderly people from the local Bangladeshi and Asian community in an environment appropriate to their individual needs.

“It will enable some of the community’s most frail people to remain independent for longer in safe and comfortable surroundings.”

Razia Bari has recently been employed as the Sonali Gardens project development officer. She will work with the community to encourage people to use the centres.

She said: “The facilities at Sonali Gardens will be purpose built and very modern. It will mean elderly people can remain at the heart of their community with their family and friends close by.”

Sonali Gardens is being developed as a partnership between Tower Hamlets Council and Circle 33 Housing Association. The building is expected to open in July 2004.

A showroom is due to be open in January to enable people to see what the centre will look like.
