At least six Wits University students have been arrested this morning as
part of the South African police's response to a spontaneous students

university management to cut financial aid by half.

At least six Wits University students have been arrested this morning as
part of the South African police's response to a spontaneous students
uprising which broke out on Monday as a result of a decision by the
university management to cut financial aid by half.

Police have apparently assaulted protesting students and there is a high
police presence at the university with armoured police units and
hellicopters over-head.

The six are apparently being held at the Johannesburg Cental Police
Station and thus far no attempt is known to have been made at securing
bail for the arrested students.

Will keep you updated as events unfold, in the mean time though we
urgently need to raise money for bail. If you can help contact me at
