IWCA gears up for council elections

iwca | 26.04.2004 20:23 | Oxford

Candidates for the city council elections on 10 June were selected at a meeting of Blackbird Leys IWCA activists last month.

Stuart Craft will be standing for Northfield Brook ward (Greater Leys and everything on the Kassam Stadium side of Blackbird Leys road), which he currently represents as a city councillor.

Lee Cole will be standing for Blackbird Leys ward (the rest of the estate).

To start off the election campaign the IWCA recently spoke to a number of households as part of our ongoing ‘Your Point of View’ survey. The main issues that came up were similar to those of previous surveys—crime and class-A drug dealing, lack of youth provision and inadequate facilities.

The large majority of residents we spoke to still feel that the main parties (Labour, Lib Dems, Conservatives) aren’t listening to their views while around 75% would be prepared to vote for an alternative.
