What is the Russian Economic Forum?
From 18 April to 20 April, the Russian Economic Forum is meeting in London to discuss Russia’s economic future.
The R.E.F is an ever-expanding group comprised of Russia’s ruling elite, state officials and business leaders with their Western counterparts. They have met annually over the last 7 years to discuss ways to further ‘liberalise’ Russian resources for the needs of the global market. This is not good news for impoverished Russian workers or the future health of Russian eco-systems.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, western capitalists in conjunction with the Russian State, have queued to invest in Russia, where lower wages and laxer environmental legislation mean greater profit for the multinationals.
This years meeting will focus on the energy market and telecommunications, hence the presence of representatives of Shell Oil and other murdering corporations. Also in the offing is Russia’s inclusion into the World Trade Organisation.
Executive speakers include representatives from BP, the WTO, British Airways, ChevronTexaco, and even Prince Andrew (they must be desperate!).
We are here not to beg for tighter state legislation, but to act in solidarity with those in Russia (and globally) who are fighting to create a world free from the tyranny of states, capitalism and ecological destruction; to show those who put profits before life that we will oppose and challenge them at every opportunity.
