FIREFIGHTER COMPETES IN ENDURANCE SAHARA MARATHON

Ayrshire born firefighter Ian Sim (25) from Glasgow is today completing the final stage of the 19th Marathon des Sables, an endurance event which takes place annually in the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

The event takes place over 6 days and the distance covered is around 230km (144 miles), the equivalent of 5 ½ regular marathons. Temperatures reach 45C during the day and as low as 0C at night.

Competitors must be completely self sufficient and carry with them all equipment and food required during the week. They sleep in the open air at night under shelters which are provided.

· Ian Sim is a serving firefighter with Strathclyde Fire Brigade and is running in aid of the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund. Firefighting and rescue work is inherently dangerous and, although accidents and fatalities are thankfully now not an everyday occurrence, firefighters still face physical and physiological problems resulting from the work they do day in, day out. To this end the Fund now provides assistance through the provision of recuperative care, rehabilitation and therapy and financial support. Last year, over 800 serving and retired firefighters, received therapy, rehabilitation and nursing care at Jubilee House Therapy Centre. However, the centre presently requires £1 million per year to run. In order to help the team at Jubilee House continue to expand and improve the services, the FSNBF needs support.

· In addition to raising funds for this very worthwhile cause, Ian Sim also sees this event as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to test himself to the limit and experience the incredible desert environment as few others will.
