stuff happening in new squatted social centre

terri dactal | 07.04.2004 12:01 | Free Spaces | Oxford

A new space was squatted this week, there's lots of potential for good stuff to happen. We're at 220 Cowley Road.

We'll be doing gardening tomorrow (Thursday) from about 11 am. At 6 pm on Thursday there's an open meeting for anyone who's interested in getting involved with the social centre or has ideas for things to do there.

Where?

There are 27 Cowley Roads in the UK, 7 of which are in London. Care to narrow it down?

.

legal status

Hey all,

It might be an idea for people involved to clarify the legal status of the new social centre...a full range of people
aren't going to come along unless they know what the situation is beforehand. Not everyone is familiar with
squatting and all that lark...

For more information about squatting see  http://www.squat.freeserve.co.uk/ . Have a look at the future Oxford Social Centre website as well,  http://free.hostdepartment.com/o/oxsocial/ . For an introduction on squatting, see "Notes for New Squatters",  http://www.squat.freeserve.co.uk/notes.htm . For example,

"SQUATTING IS STILL LEGAL

Despite the introduction of the Criminal Justice Act, Squatting is still legal. Squatting means occupying empty property to live in and is a necessity for many. Squatters have the same basic rights as anyone else, and can not be evicted without the owners carrying out certain civil legal procedings first. (...)"

Also have a look at the following Resource centre:  http://www.squat.freeserve.co.uk/centre.htm .

"SQUATTING is a solution to homelessness, empty properties, speculation and building unnecessary new homes on greenfield sites. It provides homes for those who can't get public housing and who can't afford extortionate rents.

SQUATTING creates space for needed community projects.

SQUATTING means taking control instead of being pushed around by bureacrats and property owners.

SQUATTING IS STILL LEGAL, NECESSARY AND FREE"

fantastic

I think its fantastic that we have a social centre here(with whatever name it ends up with). In Italy squatted public buildings have been the birthplace of all sorts of cultural and political movements including the whole tutte bianche and disobbedienti things. They act as info points, cafés, alternative education centres, recycling centres and they have great gigs (where I lived that was the main fund raising thing)..... tons more stuff too.

If we use it fully and properly we should be able to stay there for a bit but if not there will always be somewhere else begging to be squatted.

I thought Oxford was shit but now I'm wondering.......
