Rollright Stones vandalised

Casparian Aremi | 05.04.2004 15:23 | London | Oxford

The Rollright Stones, a large ancient stone circle in Oxdordshire, were vandalised last weekend, with yellow paint sprayed over every stone, causing upwards of £200,000 damage.

English Herritage and the National Trust have inspected the damage, and have arranged experts who have worked on repairing damage at Avebury to assist the Rollright Trust, owners of the stones.

It is thought the vandalism took place between 8 and 9am on April 1st, as the paint was still wet when wardons arrived on site.

A reward will be offered for any information which leads to the conviction for someone of this crime. Pledges are being asked for by the Rollright Trust, Pagan Federation, WiccaUK and other pagan organisations.

You say that yellow spray paint was used.. but also that the paint was wet when wardens arrived. This seems unlikely - anyone with experience of spray paint knows it dries very very fast.

pedantic

Why the negativity?

It wasn't one stone, it was every stone of a large stone circle.

It was not spray paint used. It states paint was sprayed, by that we mean it was spread out over an area either thrown from the tin or using a brush. The photo attached clearly shows it wasn't spray paint.

And what the hell does "Pagans are shit wankers anyway" mean?! This has nothing to do with liking or disliking the practises of others, it's the fact people go out of their way to cause huge amounts of damage to these ancient stones which mean a lot to many people. Was there any sort of political motive here? Have the stones been used in the bombing of iraq or keeping asylum seekers out of the country? Why do you feel the need to be so negative about this story, it's just as important as any other which is displayed here.
